getting a job as a graduate

Wondered if I could get pearls of wisdom on here of how to help my DS get a job next year.

Applying for Engineering graduate schemes and getting nowhere - has potentially a very good degree/masters.

Have been told, may need work experience before you get on good graduate schemes but it seems so hard to get. Seems to be at disadvantage that he didn't do a Year in industry.

Where can he start? Tips most welcome.

Has he got an application into BAe? www.baesystems.com/en/careers/careers-in-the-uk/graduates/graduate-opportunities open til 31 Jan 2019.

Martin Baker also has a programme - martin-baker.com/careers/year-in-industry/

Has he got a list with links and applied to them all?

DS also graduating (Chem Eng) this year. He did summer internship last year, and was offered graduate job at the end of the placement which he will take up in September. The process was arduous, 5 steps of tests, interviews and finally an assessment centre. He had worked the summer before - very manual work at a brewery, also took on officer role in a Uni society. He got rejections from many though and didn't even hear back from some. Friends whose DC didn't get graduate program positions in all sorts of fields the year before him, have now all managed to either get on graduate programs after they graduated or graduate level jobs and a few have gone into further study. I would encourage your DS just to keep trying and applying and something will come up. I really feel for the kids these days, it seems so much harder than when we were applying for our first jobs.

Has he been in touch with the Royal Aeronautical Society? They can help with cv and networking. Is he a student member of any other progressional institution?

What a lovely post happycamper2. Thanks.

Prof. Institutions on list to do after exams. 1 done. 3 to go.

Why after exams? Should this be shunted down the road? He can be a student member and gain from that, surely?

If he can afford to do unpaid work experience, contact commanding officer HMS Sultan, the school of naval engineering. Largest employer of engineering graduates in the country. Or Commanding Officer RAFCosworth for school of aeronautical engineering. Army school of engineering is based at Brompton Barracks, Chatham so could try there if interested.
Would he consider becoming an engineering officer on a short commission with one of armed forces? He’d get his degree paid off, get a golden hello (I think still) and free training with a £30k starting salary.
He could apply for summer internship with Rolls Royce. They are good employer of youngsters locally.
Try something like Eurostar or Virgin trains?
Where does he want to end up?

Bublesbuddy - you have some useful points but with respect you come across as critical and judgemental

DS has 1'week of exams to go with some anxiety as he is after a high 1st. Next week is fine. Each young person needs different support.
Hope this will not cause argy bargy. Want ideas for him and the best will be acted upon with my support.
