Applying for MA- best way to be successful?

I recently applied to do an arts based MA which involved auditioning. It's a really tough course to get on to and extremely limited places. Unfortunately I have just found out I haven't got a place. I am pretty gutted and asked for feed back which was offered, but it hasn't come through yet.

I am about to apply to another university. Does anyone have any tips of how to be successful- either in the written application or interview? I haven't been to university for 30 years. One thing which threw me at my last audition/interview was how informal the panel were. They were wearing jeans and t-shirts, very laid back and I felt really over dressed! I know this shouldn't matter really, but found it a little off putting.

Have you been to any postgrad open days? Or undergrad open days if your unis don't do specific postgrad ones. I wonder if it might be helpful to go along and talk to staff about going back into education after a long gap, ask them what to expect at interviews, what they are looking for in applicants, etc. I know the undergrad open days I've been to with dd have usually offered workshops or talks on writing personal statements, the application process, etc and staff (whether admin office people or academics) are normally very approachable and helpful. If you're not able to do this, maybe ring the department you're applying to and ask if you could talk to someone about the application process, what they are looking for, etc.
