Hi hoping for any words of advice for Cambridge for Vet applications that differs from the application for the other vet schools? My daughter is looking to apply for 2020 and any helpful tips appreciated.

Thank you.

What does it say on their web site? It’s one ucas application for all, so tick the Cambridge boxes and see how she gets on. All of the courses are ludicrously competitive so it’s best not to over rely on one. They all want loads of animal experience and stonking grades! Plus demonstrable interest in being a vet.

Presumably she's looked at this?

There really shouldn't be any reason for her not to apply there.

One thing I noticed was that the 'allocation' for the two women's colleges (Murray Edwards and Newnham) is quite high. Girton has the most places; this may be because the vet school is on the West Cambridge site, so Girton isn't so far away from it as from the more central departments. The 'hill' colleges are the closest (Churchill, Murray Edwards and Fitzwilliam).

Good luck to her, wherever she applies.Smile

Within the vet working world Cambridge has a bit of a reputation for creating better researchers than practical vets, probably because of the compulsory intercalation in y3.

Equine within the university is a bit limited because Newmarket is so close so massive competition from two world class hospitals. Can be balanced with easy access for good EMS.

Hi thank you for info :) DD will start looking at colleges she definitely wants to give it a go. She also thinks she may want to go into research at this point and has an equine vet placement coming up at next half term. Any offer from any vet school would of course be amazing.

I think the University of Liverpool has a very good Equine Vet school. I would consider them.

I just remembered the Cambridge interactive graph generator - you can look at application offer stats for any course and/or college. The acceptance rate for vet med looks to be quite similar to (or even better than) other STEM subjects. Your DD might like to play with this if she's weighing up the pros and cons of colleges.
