Medicine 2020

EightToSixer · 30/09/2018 20:53

Ok, so I know it's super early, but I've been hovering at the medicine 18 and 19 threads. DD is keen to apply for medicine in 2020. Is anyone else in the same boat?
I thought it would be useful to share info and stories, it's all a very steep learning curve because despite me now having a PhD and working in a RG university I was late to learning and not a patch on my DD who is very driven and organised.
Hopefully people will find this group and we can share the rollercoaster of the next two years.

I've no doubt that in 12 months time when our DC put in their applications that entry qualifications would have evolved so its just a case of the DC's working hard to get those predicted grades and preparing for UKCAT and BMAT.

I'm pretty certain that most DC's who jump over the various hurdles to get to the interview stage will all have a real interest in medicine otherwise why go through the stressful process.

Following and learning! All new to me. Dd yr 12 read that book and has decided to go for medicine espec paediatric.
has 99 double science 99 888 77 at GCSE. Has signed up for something some open doctor event? school is arranging for students to go (local state comp consortium 6th form) ... excited for this journey for her... I maybe asking for help...

Bati · 04/11/2018 08:21

Can I join in, Dd yr 12 wants to apply for VetMed. I have looked to see if there is a vetmed20 thread but can't find one.
We have been to 2 open days so far and planning on 3 more come spring time.
Getting Work Experience has been our hurdle and still is. So far she has work experience in Kennels and after contacting 26 vets practices either by email, phoning or personally going to see them only 1 offered her work experience. Luckily it's a good one and she goes every saturday.
She has been lucky and managed to get work experience booked in a dairy farm, a week in a small animal farm and stables
Just hoping to get some lambing experience sorted and a large animal vets.
Is anyone looking at applying to Cambridge, DD is considering it but we have no idea how you go about picking a college.

oneteen · 04/11/2018 08:44

Cambridge normally offer a Veterinary Masterclass in July which maybe of help to you DD Bati.

Not much activity with DD - we have just cancelled the masterclass at Cambridge for Medicine in a few weeks because she has a Christmas job and its the main opening on that day...she was initially not going to work on that day but it looks like the job (Christmas ELF) may have some benefits that can relate to medicine - she has been taught some sign language and will helping all day on the Special Needs day - so given that Cambridge is not a consideration on balance its probably the right decision because she is doing the Debate Chamber course in Feb.

cestlavielife · 04/11/2018 09:35

How much is the debate chamber course. ?is it worth it? It didn't seem to be clear on the mobile website.

oneteen · 04/11/2018 10:00

Its £175 for the two days in London - but its medicine not Veterinary...the masterclasses at Cambridge are £20.

cestlavielife · 04/11/2018 12:50

Dd looking at medicine
I 'll check the Cambridge ones...

Another poster looking at vetmed

oneteen · 04/11/2018 13:20

Sorry - obviously I have Sunday morning not yet awake syndrome!

Bati · 04/11/2018 16:43

Oneteen - thanks, The veterinary masterclass at Cambridge looks good and well worth it for £20. I will see if school will allow her the time off and hopefully book when they release next year's dates
Rvc is too far away for us to travel to, which is a shame.

3catsandadog · 04/11/2018 16:59

Hi Bati - My DD is applying for Cambridge she is just going to the pick the college she likes the look of most and hope for the best :)

oneteen · 10/11/2018 10:47

Exciting to see offers coming out now for 2019 entrants.

Just wondered if your DC's had chosen any Uni's to apply to yet....DD isn't at that stage yet and too engrossed in her A Levels... she has a Chemistry visit to the Emmanuel Centre in London on Monday and then a Physics visit to Cambridge on Thursday - both with the school...good job she has not taken Maths because there is also a Maths visit this week too!

3catsandadog · 10/11/2018 11:01

For vet med only 8 to choose from so DD is going for Nottingham, Surrey, Bristol and Cambridge. Have yet to do any open days so will be going next year.

mumsneedwine · 10/11/2018 11:33

New vet school opening next year at Keele. 😁

3catsandadog · 10/11/2018 12:21

That's interesting Mumsneedwine thank you :)

Just came across this 2 day event at Liverpool in December which looks very good... I think it would have been very good for my DD and she would have broken up from school by then but unfortunately she is scheduled to work on both days - maybe of interest to someone although not sure how many places are available :

mumsneedwine · 10/11/2018 13:34

My DD did the taster day at Liverpool a few years ago (was £30) and she said it was really helpful. I loved Liverpool but word of warning. They hold their interviews in the cathedral crypt which is a bit spooky - and freezing cold !

sincethereis · 06/07/2019 14:50

.

SirTobyBelch · 07/07/2019 19:29

@sincethereis - I guess you're placemarking this thread.

A few updates...

Kent & Medway and Edge Hill have their first intakes in 2020, so there are two extra places to look at.

Kent & Medway and UCLan have standard offers of AAB (but UCLan can only recruit 15 home students from certain areas of north-west England). Birmingham has dropped its standard offer to AAA from A*AA.

Newcastle no longer has any science A-level requirements. But you still need AAA (any subjects) to get in and a stonking UCAT score to get an interview.

Please see www.medschools.ac.uk/studying-medicine/applications/entry-requirements for all entry requirements.

sincethereis · 07/07/2019 23:19

@SirTobyBelch

Wow, thank you so much.

I was placemarking - wasn’t sure if this thread was still active or not. It would be nice to make this more active.

DD is predicted AAA so definitely will be pointing her towards Birmingham now!

bellylaughs · 09/07/2019 17:51

Can I join? DD has just booked her UCAT test date for early August so it feels a bit more real now. We’ve done a lot of open days too!

lljkk · 09/07/2019 20:15

I'll join .

DD booked UCAT (Sept) & BMAT (August) & attended 4 Open Days already.
She's almost organised some care home WE for the summer.
DH is in sticker shock at how much we'll have to pay to support her to do the degree.
School has started coaching them on Personal Statements.

Shangrilalala · 09/07/2019 21:54

Me too. DD has a week of hospital work experience next week and UCAT for early September. We did KCL at the weekend - our fourth and last open day this academic year. Feels like a marathon!

242Mummy · 10/07/2019 12:35

Me too - DS1 is applying for Medicine, 2020 entry.

In past years, the Medicine threads have been so warm and supportive, hope we have the same. I've hesitated to start contributing as everything is still so nebulous - no idea which unis he should be targeting until UCAT and BMAT results are known.

He's signed up for the August BMAT and late Sept UCAT. Summer hols will mostly be revising for these! Plans are for him to continue his part-time Pharmacy job, weekly volunteer stint at CA&E at a local hospital and to finish off a couple of MOOCs he has started.
