Doing a degree in Equine Science is a complete waste of time and money isn't it?

Because dd wants to put it as her insurance and I just think it's a load of bobbins.

I wonder if it is easy or even possible to be accepted for a masters qualification in physiotherapy with no primary qualification in it? To me it really sounds as if she has not thought things through, but that is just my impression and I have not thoroughly researched the courses.

It is possible to go from sports science, yes definitely in fact it's more attractive than biology. But not equine science!!

I know 2 women who did that degree and they are both vet nurses now.

BubblesBuddy · 25/09/2018 08:20

She can do a Masters in Physiotherapy after Sports Science. Southampton do one, for example. It’s 2 years full time. If they do it, I have no doubt others offer it. It just means 5 years of study altogether.

Miladymilord · 25/09/2018 08:22

Yes lots of places do it.

5 years is fine. Both degrees have lots of industry contacts so she should go straight into decent work after. But not if she does a flipping equine science degree!!

A lovely way to accrue at least 30k debt! If there is no money in it she will never have to pay it back. You repay it as a percentage of your salary over 25K now. If your earning about 30k its just over £30 a month.

Miladymilord · 25/09/2018 08:43

To me it really sounds as if she has not thought things through. I'll say one thing for her, she's really thought it through! Apart from the equine science biy

Yes, that bit Grin

Miladymilord · 25/09/2018 08:48

Yes I think she can be dissuaded. She doesn't even muck out her own bloody horse if she can help it

Having thought about it I think it's a way of not quite leaving home. She's nervous about uni, she'll have to leave her horse who is her life and I think it's a way of keeping that going. Making it clear to her that she wouldn't be taking her horse as we can't afford livery for him should put her off.

Livery stables near university? Expensive but not unheard of.

Miladymilord · 25/09/2018 11:47

I think it would be a shame as she'd spend her life with him (especially as he almost certainly wouldn't like it at livery) and not mingle. I want him for dd3 anyway!!

My SIL has a degree in Equine studies. She thoroughly enjoyed it and walked into a graduate entry PR / Events management role on graduation.

Reckon it would be equally good for doing sports physio post grad as sports science - know lots of people doing / who have done this. Temptation with sports science is that you end up hustling down the gym as a self employed personal trainer and unless you have a specific sport specialism jobs in sports physio can be hard to come by. As she rides and has her own horse I would have thought playing to her specialism would be better.

Ollivander84 · 25/09/2018 11:56

I did leisure management specialising in equine for my degree. Never used it Grin
I work for a luxury car brand now, and I took my horse to uni with me for the 5 years I was there

Daughter wants to do similar and I think, why not? Godda do what you're interested in for three years rather than just think about what it would lead to. If needs another year after that for something more sellable, then we'll see at that time.
I did Sociology as I was interested. Got me into a Masters in a completely different subject and have had a successful career in construction management and engineering.

flatmouse · 25/09/2018 19:37

DD wants to do similar - focusing on therapy & rehabilitation. (Equine not sports). Im prepared to support that, still figuring out how to get there BTEC or A levels. Leaning towards BTEC, but she's doing her research.
