Edinburgh University Law - an insider's view

Hello

I'd be very grateful for any insider information on the Law course and department at University of Edinburgh.

My son has just achieved Highers of 5 As and a B in fifth year and is likely to receive an offer, along with Glasgow. He would probably prefer Edinburgh as a city, but I have heard mildly alarming things about poor student satisfaction, including feedback on work and poor academic support. Do these claims have any grounding?

Many thanks!

Edinburgh only does Scots Law LLB. Glasgow allows you to choose between Scots Law or Common Law LLB.

Whatever the different rankings say, for Law at Magic Circle and at the Bar, Oxbridge is top. Not Glasgow, Edinburgh or anywhere else. It’s closely followed by Durham with other RG universities not far behind. This is because they ALL take Oxbridge rejects.

If he really wants the MC career, thinking Glasgow is above Oxford is just a non starter OP. There clearly are grads that come via the Scottish route but it takes longer. It’s ludicrously competitive. Put yourself near the top by ticking the most boxes you can. Also huge law grads don’t do Law at all. Around 50% are non law grads. They also have graduated from the top unis so you have to compete with them. They like MFL for example. So think very carefully about what he really wants. MC or lower?

Huge numbers of law grads don’t work in law at all..... that should have said. Therefore a good course doesn’t mean a good job after the top few!

Oxford then Edinburgh.

The LLB is the important one as that is the academic qualification. The Diploma is the professional qualification.

Thank you everyone!

That's given us a lot to think about and work on.

Open Days are in a few weeks.

If he gets an offer at Oxford, it's a no brainer. Edinburgh sounds like the most sensible option out of the rest.

Many thanks once again.
