The old thread seems to have filled up!

Yes council tax didn't exist in my day. Or wifi! And I lived in a flat where all utilities were included #haditeasy Grin

HSMMaCM · 12/09/2018 16:40

Horse Shock They just think things will happen by magic don't they!

NeedMoreSleep, DD seemed to get Wi-fi sorted before anything else Hmm.

Horsemad · 12/09/2018 17:29

Indeed HSMMaCM!

He is starting to do my head in a bit now, tbh.
Hasn't booked an arrival time for his halls yet either... Hmm

Haffdonga · 12/09/2018 18:30

Well ds is home from his travels and infuriatingly smug because he didn't get stopped at a single airport with all his randomly named travel documents. So much for international security, eh?

Older brother and his girlfriend are also using us as a hotel here after travelling before going back to uni so we now have a household with every available cm squared strewn with wet towels, half emptied backpacks and half-filled bags of pots, pans, cheese graters and bed linen. The poor washing machine hasn't had a break since Friday.

The Grand Depart is this weekend with muggins here doing a Saturday taxi journey to one uni city and Sunday to the other. If between them they manage to be packed and organised with the correct belongings ending up in the correct destination, I'll eat my hat.

But god I'll miss them when they've all gone

Horsemad · 12/09/2018 18:39

We have 3 nights next week with NO offspring here before DS1 returns from the States, complete with girlfriend in tow...

And DH isn't on night's either, yippee!!! Wink

Horsemad · 12/09/2018 18:41

Hmmm so excited about next week, I inserted an apostrophe. Apologies! Grin

LooseHipsWobbleShips · 12/09/2018 19:07

No prep being done here at all. DS has two weeks before he goes back and three weeks until the start of term. He's not much company atm either spending a lot of time in his room. I think he's a bit nervous about the new house but that could be me 'projecting', as is my wont. DS2 back at school and stressed about tests and exams already (Y11) and DH away all week again. Sorry, feeling gloomy tonight.

ono40 · 12/09/2018 21:23

Thanks for the tips on council tax - I have Googled it and sent DS the link to the form together with dire warnings of not assuming someone else will do it. I can but try....

Meanwhile he is doing my head in by texting me and asking me to keep him dinner and just now saying he isn't coming home. I wouldn't have made as much if he'd said he was staying out. Grrr…. I will miss him/the idea of him when he departs (on a date yet to be revealed but no doubt announced with a maximum of half a day's notice).

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2018 22:59

DD's organised the broadband for her house, I think it's a 9 month student contract from BT. The other utilities are included, but I've not heard her mention council tax so I'll get her to check that.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2018 08:36

She says hers will be classed as a 'house of multiple occupation' so the landlord pays the council tax.

Nice when your kids start knowing more about this stuff than you do!Grin

Needmoresleep · 13/09/2018 09:47

Errol, sorry, but I am not sure your DD has overtaken her mum.

In some areas HMOs are any property that contains more than one household. Like a two bed flat rented to sharers.

Students are exempt from Council Tax. I assume properties registered as student accomodation, like halls of residence, or houses owned by a University and only are available to students, may be registered with the council as being exempt. But normal properties, whether registered HMO or not, rented through an agent won't. If a tenant is responsible for Council tax it will be in the lease.

Apologies to others. I feel I am being pedantic.

DD is already planning a mid term trip home. I am looking forward to it and trying to think of an excuse to visit her.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2018 11:11

Much better be pedantic, check and find something is unnecessary than not!

She thought I was referring to where she's living now, which definitely is an HMO. But the uni house is rented on a per room basis through the college, not 'joint and severally' like most student houses.

Now to sort out her room here... we replaced the carpet in our bedroom yesterday and dumped all our stuff in hers, we need to obliterate all traces of this incursion in the next couple of days! Grin

Xenia · 13/09/2018 11:14

Need, that is my understanding too and the Govenrment site says if you receive a council tax bill as a student you need to get in touch and register for exemption (although it is certainly a good idea to check ).

Eve · 13/09/2018 12:58

DS doesnt start til 1st Oct , so a few weeks of him left.

He's had a selection of jobs at festivals and events this summer, was car parking at carfest, catering at cricket and is spending next 10 days catering at the boat show.

The jobs have opened his eyes to how rude / impatient people are - he was telling me about how angry some people - all men - got at having to park a row or 2 away from where they wanted or having to wait a few minutes for chips to fry.

BestIsWest · 13/09/2018 20:26

What’s the situation with TV Licensing? DS and housemates have clubbed together and bought a TV and reckon they won’t be watching BBC only Netflix and Prime.

Is it correct that if they stream from a laptop which is not plugged in this counts as a mobile device and they don’t need a Licence? I’ve pointed out that they only need one for 9 months and that’s only £3.50 per month each.

BestIsWest · 13/09/2018 20:29

Need - no scientists, they are an arty household. I’ve passed your tips on thank you.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/09/2018 20:41

Tv license info

www.tvlicensing.co.uk/check-if-you-need-one/for-your-home/students-aud1

The first section makes it look like they need one, but then there's the 'are you covered bit', which is where the unplugged part comes in - designed, apparently for the benefit of caravanners with portable TVs but now applicable to mobile devices so long as you charge them first.

BestIsWest · 13/09/2018 20:53

Sounds like they are correct reading that Errol.

Xenia · 14/09/2018 14:24

Best, that is what I understand to - if they don't plug in, just stream etc they are okay.

MoorMummy · 14/09/2018 14:38

DS returns for Y2 on Monday, we are flying back from Portugal today so will be mad rush to turn his washing round! We've moved a lot of his stuff in already, so its just the last bits , clothes and food. Hes been back since more of less the end of April , so its going to be strange being just the two of us again!

He’s in a v. swanky apartment this year with a lovely group, so i feel much happier , as his first year accomodation wasnt great and he never bothered with any of his flatmates.

Trip to New York as part of this years course, i havent even been there myself 😂

Hope everyones DC setlle back in and a have a fabulous 2nd year. If its anything like last year it will simply fly!

Horsemad · 15/09/2018 09:51

Hmmm, we appear to be missing DS's crockery and bath towels...

I am sure they came home; where the hell are they?!

HSMMaCM · 15/09/2018 10:24

Horse -!in the garage?

DD is going back tomorrow. No sign of packing going on here.

OP posts:
Horsemad · 15/09/2018 10:50

Not in the garage, but we did unearth DS1's uni crockery in there, so he's taking that. Smile

captainoftheshipwreck · 15/09/2018 11:56

Not much preparation being done here. Aiming to hit Sainsbury's at some time this weekend. DD and I usually manage about half an hour before we both need a coffee. And a cake. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 15/09/2018 12:28

I need to hit Sainsbury's presently to stock up on foods DD likes before she gets home tomorrow, and get our laundry done before she (doubtlessly) brings home her last fortnights worth... we really are arse about face hereGrin
