The old thread seems to have filled up!

Ds will be heading back for 2nd year in 3 weeks!...he's going up to Edinburgh for the Festival/Fringe with 4 of his school mates next weekend so I'll only have 1 weekend left with him and dd2 who is currently at a music festival in Hungary!
We're going on long haul holiday the weekend before he sets off so I'm hoping he remembers to pack everything and gets to train station on time - fortunately he's stored a lot of his stuff in a storage unit over the summer
He's had a fairly decent job over the summer which has helped support his social life and give him a bit of a buffer before student loan comes in

Gosh, A level results tomorrow- it seems a long time ago since last year (in some ways at least).

Report
Horsemad · 15/08/2018 20:59

Doesn't it just?! Grin Can still remember the night before results so clearly.

The past year has gone SO fast though... Shock

LooseHipsWobbleShips · 15/08/2018 21:17

Where has that year gone?!
Actually, we're awaiting an A level result for DH this year who did a language for fun, as you do! Thankfully nothing riding on this one.

Had a quick look st the a level resits thread - brought me right back to the stress of waiting for those results!

Have gcse results though next week!

Hope they go well Eve!

Yes! Where did the year go?

DS moved in to his flat today. Tomorrow he's getting an early train back to scotland as he has a gig.

I've led a sheltered life so it looks 'edgy' and very gritty urban to my mind. But it's walking distance to music school. And it has a sofa under the stairs. They'll enjoy having a communal area.

He's in one of the Monopoly brown areas. Made it.

DS is back today minus his keys which the estate agent asked for to give to a boiler engineer who was coming to fix the boiler. (On the moving in date)

Someone else was in the flat painting the walls, which were damp. Estate agent says this is because the flat had been vacant for a week 😮

Report
ErrolTheDragon · 17/08/2018 19:15

That doesn't sound great. But hopefully if the boiler is fixed it will be ok.

Report
rogueantimatter · 17/08/2018 21:21

Damp walls from damp rather than wet paint. Just realised that was possibly ambiguous.
Must remember to check with him that it has a fire alarm.

Very nice prom on tonight by the way.

DD is back at her college for a couple of days helping on an access course. She'll be going back early too, they do a 'warm up' for the first years on a few of the courses before freshers ... can't keep her away from the place!Grin

Hello everyone. Oh yes, don't the A level results threads and the 'what do I need for uni' threads bring it all back?

Ds has been working in the most boring job in the world for most of the summer so is really looking forward to going back after a bit of a holiday. Meanwhile his older bro is back from a year abroad to start his masters year and currently in the loft reclaiming all the pots and pans, mattress toppers and door stops that we handed on to ds2 for uni. I am going to be doing the whole uni shopping malarkey all over again to kit out another student.

DD has been trawling the internet, to try and get her year 2 books without spending all the money she's earned this summer. Still waiting for her timetable, which was due in July.

Rather to our surprise, DD hasn't had to buy any books at all so far. Apart from the expense, at least it's less to lug around. Maybe she makes up for that in folders though, she seems to have a lot more of those than I remember from being a student.

PilarTernera · 21/08/2018 15:32

DD was complaining that she has not got her timetable yet. I guess she feels ready to go back.

She keeps mentioning things she wants to buy - bedding, bras, frying pan, trainers. She seems to be angling to have them all go on the parental credit card.

DS can get the keys to his flat on 1 Sept and Thinks he will go back the following weekend back then even though his course doesn’t start until the 25th.

DD has already had a party in their new house! She is back home again for now, but is planning to go back in a couple of weeks as she needs to get a job. She seems to be happy with her new timetable - 2hours more contact time and no 9ams!

Hello - mum of 18 year old here, just about to start Uni. and wanting to treat himself a MacBook to take. He's going to lose it isn't he? He's going to go from a lecture/tutorial to play sport, or to the pub and leave it somewhere isn't he?

Would your sons and daughters suggest that he goes for a "normal" laptop, which might be a bit less portable, but is a bit heavier to sit on his shoulder, therefore a bit harder to lose?

Much more likely that he'll get he'll drop coffee on it (DS1 first year), he'll get burgled (ds1 second year) or it will die irretrievably with his dissertation on it (ds1 third year),

Just get it insured.

Mine has a normal windows laptop. A MacBook wouldn't be compatible with some of the software used by the dept, I think. Obviously it may depend on the course - eg the requirements may be more defined for those with a computing element - but he needs to check this.

Notquite DD got a mac book air to take to uni (and free beats headphones!) And it is still going strongGrin
I don't think they are more likely to get damaged than a laptop are they?
Free Office downloaded from uni too.

ErrolTheDragon · 23/08/2018 13:59

I don't think DD carries her laptop around much, I'm sure she doesn't take it into the department, but again this will depend on course and how/where each student likes to work.

Report
HSMMaCM · 23/08/2018 15:32

DD has a laptop in her room and an iPad she takes to lectures to read Facebook take notes.
