The old thread seems to have filled up!

Yeah, I wish DS was staying in his halls - much nicer than some grotty student house will be! 😆

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2019 10:31

Happy new year
Dd has emailed her landlord to ask for first refusal on the place for next year, one woman might be moving out for a year abroad but they've got a friend coming back from a year abroad who will take her place if so.

She's changed her course from the msci to the Bsc because the fourth year isn't what she wants in terms of content so she's looking into whether to take a year out for work experience and then applying to another uni that does the course she wants which is practical instead of research based. She's doing two lots of relevant volunteering alongside her degree and has a placement in the summer organised.

In between, DS1 had a flat very much more how I remember private accommodation (but with central heating), but his 2nd year and current houses were newly converted and the 2nd year one was all en suiteSmile.

This is in Selly Oak, Birmingham.

Xenia · 01/01/2019 10:44

My twins fixed up their year 3 houses a little bit eariler.
Happy New Year to all.
I have a house full of university students at the moment and they seem to be having a good time here - they put on a dinner here last night, men in dinner jackets. They all looked so smart. Most of them are about to go out somewhere for breakfast.... pause... I went upstairs to point out there may not be that many places open on 1 Jan so check first before leaving.

We're going out to lunch - it's a birthday tradition - carefully checked by DH since the year when we first tried it and the only place we could find was pizza express. Fortunately DD was at an age where that worked well!

Xenia · 01/01/2019 10:55

Actually you are probably right some places will be open. Some of them just left without checking I am sure they can drive around and find something.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2019 11:04

They'll have a smartphone and won't have a hungry small child! Grin

HSMMaCM · 01/01/2019 11:06

DD cried yesterday, because her boyfriend had to go back to uni town to work. Within half an hour she had found old school friends to meet up with.

She has a nice flat this year, so I'm hoping she can find something ok next year.

Happy New Year, everyone! 🎆

Xenia · 01/01/2019 12:52

Poor HSM daughter. I hope she is feeling happier now.
The breakfast group returned satisfied altyhough I don't think it was a particularly good place. 2 have left for home, 2 are here and the others including my lot have gone to drive into the country for a long walk. I found wellingtons for 4 and 2 of the girls borrowed a fake leopardskin coats each so look particularly glamorous even on the day after the night before. It is not very cold I suspect once the walking gets vigorous most of them will not need a coat.

Haffdonga · 01/01/2019 13:20

Happy New Year 2nd yearers!

DS had a small gang of his oldest and closest friends over last night. It was lovely to see (and hear) them having fun. They cleared up almost completely when they left - they truly are growing up!

RedHelenB · 01/01/2019 16:10

Happy New Year everyone. Feeling a bit down because dd1 reminded me that my baby will become a teenager this year

Dd1 is much preferring living in a shared house to talks of residence btw.

Making the most of her remaining time at home. She's enjoyed being here but no doubt will be glad to get back to uni too!

Xenia · 01/01/2019 16:43

All sounds good. I think all our guests are out with my twins unless someone is a bed room upstairs (I don't want to disturb them but I've a bed to change up there) and lovely news my daughter and little grandchildren are coming to stay tomorrow and my other daughter coming over and I think some of my sons' friends are excited about seeing the toddlers....

Meanwhile more prosaically I have just been dealing with and now washing one of my sons' shirts - a dress shirt, if that's the word, for his dinner jacket so it had fancy button things you remove first I think - I don't think I've washed one of these before but I've removed them, applied the stuff to remove the sick stains and it is now in the washer in splendid isolation on a programme all to itself. You would have thought a 3 course dinner might mean less chance of people being sick.

Horsemad · 01/01/2019 17:12

Ooops, sounds like the New Year was celebrated a little too enthusiastically Xenia? 😉

bigTillyMint · 01/01/2019 17:54

MoorMummy, I lived on Division St in very central Sheff for 3 years Grin

DD went to a NYE party last night at a flat of a boy who is at uni here in London - nearly all old friends from her secondary school. Similar to Christmas Eve where the pub was rammed with old schoolmates Smile She is going to the library tomorrow, apparently!

She and her housemates are sorted for next year already - they are halfway through their degrees Shock

Stopyourhavering64 · 01/01/2019 17:57

Ds has sorted out accommodation for 3rd year, staying with his 2 current flatmates who are also on same course- which seems to have worked very well this yr ( he's in Scotland so has 4 yrs of accommodation to think of!) He has a term of field trips coming up which he's really looking forward to, already thinking about an MSc and possibly a PhD!
He had exams before Christmas and was getting consistent 2:1 and 1sts in essays, ( even got a 2:1 in Philosophy, which was an extra module which he hated!) so is having a very chilled holiday- have had several of his friends staying at various time so far, which has been lovely
2 of his school friends have dropped out of their courses as 1 was having a mental health crisis and other hated his course ( aeronautical engineering)...2 of his other school friends are doing engineering apprenticeships with Horizons and seem to be having a great time and seem to be traveling all over the country with their training and the chance to work abroad once apprenticeship is finished which just goes to show there are more ways to gain a qualification other than a Uni degree

ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2019 18:15

I've got a bit of Envyfor a house which has 4 spare pairs of assorted wellies and two leopard print coats. GrinNot so envious of the dress shirt... Fortunately we've had a fairly abstemious holiday, DD met up with some old school pals at the 'spoons but that was about it while she's been home. She and DH decided on a Dry January and I'm not fond enough of the stuff to drink alone.

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2019 18:19

DD and I have just had a row, she's complained about the state of her house and how she manages to keep it all clean and tidy despite doing her uni course. I, OTOH, work full time, bring up the younger DCs and am doing a masters degree. Wouldn't mind so much but apart from taking the recycling with me to the refuse site she hasn't done a thing to help these holidays. We then had dinner and she, having agreed to help, disappeared off upstairs without washing up (we have a rule that the cook - me - doesn't wash up.

brizzledrizzle · 01/01/2019 18:20

^ this house not her house

BestIsWest · 01/01/2019 18:34

Happy New Year everyone.
DS goes back this weekend Sad. I’ve had flu all over Christmas so haven’t been able to do much with him. I’m really going to miss him.

RedHelenB · 01/01/2019 18:40

Hope you're feeling better now Bestiswest.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/01/2019 18:40

DH is driving DD back on Saturday- she came home on the train but has a bit too much to carry back (inc the new laptop). But we're going to visit her near the start of feb, around but not on her birthday. She warned us that it may coincide with the 'halfway formal' marking the midpoint for those doing 3 year degrees (what? Already?Shock) - she's glad hers is 4 years.

MoorMummy · 01/01/2019 18:45

DS went to the uni house of one of his old school friends, ( who has stayed here in Mcr for Uni) and had a lovely night in with a group of his ex school pals. He came home just after midnight but a group went out and two of them were mugged for wallets and phones 😡😡😡. They are fine , but how awful. Lovely lads as well.

My son had an attempt mugging in Sheffield last year. So I know it can happen anywhere.

latedecember1963 · 01/01/2019 19:00

Oh those poor lads, MoorMummy! When the breaking news came through last night about the stabbing at Manchester Victoria Station I immediately checked our DS1 hadn't gone into Manchester for the NYE fireworks as he would go in on the tram. He's 25 and a hulking great rugby player but I still worry about him even though I know the chances of anything bad happening are remote. Hope your son's friends are ok today.

Xenia · 01/01/2019 19:48

I don't drink nowadays but the 9 studens certainly did last night. there are also a lot of half drunk bottles in the kitchen which is a bit of a waste.

1 pair were were my Wellingtons (I didn't go on the walk and one of the girls was my size 4.5); the other 2 were mmy daughters' left behind here.In fact I think one asked me to store hers here. We used those on Christmas day for a walk too so they seem to be coming handy. and the boy siwht wize 11 feet acutaly bought a cheap new pair of trainers on the way which he says he needed anyway. The leopardskin coats apparently made for very good photos. My daughters don't like me in them but I think they look lovely but I realise they are not to everyone's taste.

I hope the row blows over, brizzle. It sounds normal teenage girl stuff to me. I joked to my son that part of my lunch today ( prepared salad) half of it had been eaten in the night and was across the floor and he went and posted that to his friends. I have no problems over the salad. Not a big deal.

Getting this sick off is another matter.... the dress shirt still had some sick stainrs. I suppose it's green bile juice so I've uesd yet more stain remover. Meanwhile had his bedding in (I never buy white but they always seem to end up buying white things themselves) came out of the washer still with stains so it's back in again at a high heat and then I;ll do the shirt again. We will get there inthe end although with half their bedding in Bristol and having 7 extra people here last night we are down to the last of my bedding. Sleeping bags would be next.... apparently my youngest grandchild comes with a travel cot tomorrow so that sounds a lot simpler.

Best, sorry about your flu. I had an awful germ having told everyone I hadn't caught a cold for about 2 years (my last time record - it was lovely whilst it lasted). I feel a lot better today however.

Stop, those sound like good results. My twins have exams in January when they go back to Bristol.
