Medicine 2019

kaykay72 · 05/06/2018 16:32

Hi,

Does anyone here have a DC applying for medicine to start in 2019? It would be nice to meet others as we embark on uni visits, predicted grades, UKCAT etc

We’re in Kent, d is planning to visit kings, UCL, Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle at the moment. She really wanted to go look at Belfast but they want three A’s plus an A at AS level but won’t accept her additional qualification in place of this (despite it having a higher UCAS tarriff). We went to an open afternoon at BSMS which she liked more than she thought she would, so is pondering the BMAT.

I have two older kids (well, adults now), one of whom has just finished his masters, the other just completed his first year elsewhere, but medical applications are just so complicated in comparison to their experiences at this stage.

Hope to hear from others in the same boat :-)

Monkey to give you an idea of timings, DD had to be there for 9 to sign in. First circuit was 9.30, second circuit was 10.50.

Tinkobell · 22/01/2019 10:53

Good luck @monkey for Newcastle! I'd err well on the side of caution and arrive earlier than later....he can always go eat or something. We've turned up at a couple of places, what we thought was ridiculously early and she got pulled in straightaway to fill forms and mingle. We've never been told to clear off and come back later. Only at Notts was there thumb twiddling.

Monkey2001 · 22/01/2019 14:25

Thanks both. Well remembered Quadratilla! We are allowing 1.5 hours, and hopefully the university would flex the allocations to circuits if trains are severely delayed. Nice to know they have the ability to do that if they choose to.

Weaverspin · 22/01/2019 16:12

Blimey, my DD has received a Newcastle offer! She was only interviewed a week ago... Shock.

Monkey2001 · 22/01/2019 16:24

Great news Weaverspin, there have been quite a few on TSR, apparently they are getting the offers out quickly for the strongest candidates - so she must have been good!

hoodiemum · 22/01/2019 17:25

Lovely news, Weaverspin. Congratulations to your DD. Must be such a relief to have one in the bag.

I have just got sucked into reading an old Mumsnet thread about Medicine from last year. Lots of interesting advice, but It was all a bit bickery! Feeling very lucky to have such a nice supportive gang in this year's thread.

On a support note, DD has asked me to ask: has anyone done Bristol interview? She has a message from them that interviewees need to complete a form about the type and duration of their work experience prior to attending, but she doesn't know where to find the form. Does she do it on the day, before the interview itself? Or is the form online somewhere? Any advice gratefully received.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2019 18:16

Hey, Medicine2028 was the most friendly thread ever ! One person came along to derail it but the rest of us were amazing support. And some out kids are now friends at medical school.

Good luck to you all. It's so lovely to see offers coming in but don't worry if not. Some heard as late as June last year.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2019 18:16

2018 😂. I'm not a time traveller just yet

ProfessorLayton1 · 22/01/2019 18:18

Congratulations Weaverspin! Well done your Dd...
hope all of us hear some good news soon..

hoodiemum · 22/01/2019 19:17

Mumsneedwine - no, don't think that was its name. I'm sure there have been lots of nice threads too. Anyway, sorry, not trying to criticise at all, just to celebrate what a lovely thing this current thread is.
How funny to have the kids find each other in real life. I guess that must happen a lot with TSR too.

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2019 19:29

No worries hoodie 😁. These threads are so helpful and it's lovely to have people going through the same thing. It is tough in real life for people to understand why it's so different. We are a totally unmedical family and DD had to find out so much for herself (although 6th form college was great). And so if we can pass on a tiny bit of our experience and help another prospective Dr then I feel we should. Good luck to everyone. Word of advice, prepare for no sleep the night before results !

mamamedic · 22/01/2019 19:41

Brilliant news Weaverspin for you and your DD. And a huge relief I expect. X

HostessTrolley · 22/01/2019 20:30

Well done Weaverspin’s Dd - and hope all went well with the trains today Monkey

Dd is keeping busy, with her schedule of past papers each week, tests etc at school, part time job, and party planning for the weekend. Trying not to obsess about emails but checking on TSR for any updates on the unis she’s waiting to hear from, whilst not expecting to hear anything until half term reallly.

Tinkobell · 22/01/2019 20:35

Yay congrats to weaverspin jnr! 🍾🍰💫🥂🍸
slight digression, is anyone finding an increasing level of medical disclosure with their young budding Dr? We are.....kind of don't mean to but it sort of just happens - me bad knee, me bad head, me bad back.....it's fantastic having someone in the family you can sort of legitimately whine at ....in the name of education of course! 😀

Weaverspin · 22/01/2019 20:58

Thank you for your lovely words Smile. It is indeed a huge relief to have one 'in the bag'. We've still got a Liverpool interview next week, and Sheffield/Nottingham interviews already done. Be a while before we hear anything from them, I expect.

Now just for the small matter of getting the grades...! (mumsneedwine I hear what you say about no sleep before results!)

Good luck everyone & your DCs. It's a hell of a ride, isn't it?

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2019 21:06

It is a bit of a 'journey'. But oh it's so worth it when they make it. Although be warned, you will be human guinea pigs next year - who knew blood pressure taking could be so painful !!

That first offer is like taking a huge breath after being underwater. Relief. But a word of caution - my DD amazingly got 4 offers and then went into a bit of a meltdown. She suddenly had to turn down offers she had fought so hard for and that was difficult. So be ready if you find yourself there.

There is a reason for my user name 🍷

Tinkobell · 22/01/2019 21:14

@mumsneedwine.....I kind of get the meltdown, but what a good problem to kind of have!

mumsneedwine · 22/01/2019 21:33

Oh it was the most wonderful problem. And not sure how she got there but if she can do it so can your lovely kids. I believe medical schools can see if they want to be Drs. Not for parents or prestige but because they want to help.

Nightowlpossibly · 23/01/2019 02:26

Congratulations to your DD weaverspin! It is a sense of relief getting that first offer isn't it? For our Dcs and us too. I feel like I am on this ride with my DD

Even though she is the one doing all the hard work.

Just those grades to get ! I Will be a nervous wreck the night before the results, as will most of us I thinK.

Hope everyone's Dcs get some good news soon.

Prof Layton- how did UCL go?

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/01/2019 06:07

Her interview is next week.. Nightowlpossiy
Did your Dd hear from UCL?

Nightowlpossibly · 23/01/2019 12:04

Prof Layton- Sorry thought your DD has a already had interview. Hope it goes well for her. is UCL one of her top choices?

My DD not heard yet. Which is slightly concerning, as UCL is one of her favourites. Hopefully she will get some news soon.

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/01/2019 12:32

I think she will be happy with one offer but would be nice to go to UCL as she likes to be in London and liked their open day a lot...

Most UK school leavers will have their interviews in Feb/ March so plenty of time and UCL gives two weeks notice.
She heard on the 14 th from them within minutes of Cambridge rejection .. fingers crossed for your Dd.

ProfessorLayton1 · 23/01/2019 14:43

I never thought I will be anxious but I am ... we have never encouraged her to do medicine but here I am hoping that she will get one offer!
At home, I have a " not to worry, whatever happens " attitude . All I get from most people in real life is that - oh she is good, she will get in!! Some of our friends children who are frightfully bright did not get in first time around and got in next time to Cambridge after a gap year - so have some sympathy as well!

Really thankful for MN for the support I am receiving.

alreadytaken · 23/01/2019 18:06

Now my child is approaching the end of their time at medical school - UCL are good at arranging for students to do their final year on the outskirts if London rents are a problem (and they are very high). Imperial give out more prizes than most, something that helps if your child might want to apply for the Academic Foundation Programme.

Every year there are some applicants who you would expect to get an offer who dont. They are often successful if they apply the next year, although if you are lucky it gives them time to change their mind. For a couple of years there have been places available in August for those willing to ring around quickly.

Tinkobell · 23/01/2019 18:07

@proflayton - the main stream of offers / rejections hasn't really happened yet. Hold your nerve! We're rootin for you.
