Medicine 2019

Hi,

Does anyone here have a DC applying for medicine to start in 2019? It would be nice to meet others as we embark on uni visits, predicted grades, UKCAT etc

We’re in Kent, d is planning to visit kings, UCL, Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle at the moment. She really wanted to go look at Belfast but they want three A’s plus an A at AS level but won’t accept her additional qualification in place of this (despite it having a higher UCAS tarriff). We went to an open afternoon at BSMS which she liked more than she thought she would, so is pondering the BMAT.

I have two older kids (well, adults now), one of whom has just finished his masters, the other just completed his first year elsewhere, but medical applications are just so complicated in comparison to their experiences at this stage.

Hope to hear from others in the same boat :-)

Hoping this new year brings good news and fulfills everyone's aspirations .
Good news @Monkey2001 for the interviews.

Tinkobell · 08/01/2019 09:43

New Years greetings all and best wishes for a flood of easy, achievable offers for all posters! 😁 I live in constant hope from the tv reports that gaining medicine admission this year ought to be easier than ever given the chronic staff shortfalls!
We're off to Norwich this week. Final interview then a long thumb twiddle wait. Keeping busy!

Monkey2001 · 08/01/2019 10:06

Is Nightowl's DD still the only offer-holder? Oxford send out decisions tomorrow, Cambridge on Monday, any others imminent?

Tinkobell - best of luck for final interview.

Hope all your DC are able to focus on work in the midst of interview stuff. Will be such a relief when interviews are over and decisions in.

Nightowlpossibly · 08/01/2019 15:25

DD and her dad off to Manchester this evening for interview first thing tomorrow morning.

Have not heard from UCL yet so this is the 3rd of 3 interviews. ( she did Brighton on the 4th)

DD is quite glad they have all followed each other fairly quickly in the space of a month. So she can put them behind her and focus on other things. Have any other DCs had all of their interviews yet? Things seem to have moved quite quickly with DDs choices.

Hope everyone starts getting some good news soon.

Tinkobell · 08/01/2019 16:31

The only (early) offers we've heard of a thing DD's school are from KCL ......no others yet.

HostessTrolley · 08/01/2019 23:55

Still waiting too. Imperial interview next week then not expecting to hear anything from three of her choices until at least mid Feb, KCL - who knows? Quite a lot of Oxbridge applicants at DDs school (although not for medicine) so school tomorrow will be interesting, and hopefully happy for her friends who are on tenterhooks tonight.

ItsTheKissing · 09/01/2019 16:03

DSS has had 3 of 3 interviews and is just waiting. He had a 'on hold' email from Bristol so now just waiting. It's mocks this week so it's taken his mind off the wait for offers!

Quadratilla · 09/01/2019 16:10

Hello! Can I join you? DD applied to Sheffield, Southampton, Leeds and Newcastle. She had interviews at Sheffield and Southampton before Christmas, has Newcastle next week and Leeds the week after. She was lucky enough to get an offer from Southampton before Christmas.

Monkey2001 · 09/01/2019 16:25

Quadratilla - sounds like she was talented enough to get an offer from Southampton! Well done to her, must be lovely to have that in the bag. My DS has also applied to Sheffield, Newcastle and Leeds, as has a neighbour - seems to be a popular combination.

Quadratilla · 09/01/2019 16:48

Monkey - thanks for the kind words. It is reassuring to have one in the bag! She applied strategically. Southampton was a traditional interview and played to her strengths I think. Sheffield was a last minute swap for Cambridge because she decided she'd rather drop Maths and stick with her language A level! I don't think we know anyone else for Newcastle - too far away for most of them.

Monkey2001 · 10/01/2019 13:55

Any Oxford people out there? Hope you had good news.

HostessTrolley · 10/01/2019 16:00

“Any Oxford people out there? Hope you had good news.”

Dd’s Boyf got an oxford offer yesterday, not medicine but a hugely competitive course. His offer is lower than the standard offer for medicine at the London unis she’s applied to, which is making her sigh.

No news for dd yet though

WellIDontKnow · 10/01/2019 18:08

Hi all, can I join you too please?

I wonder if anyone has any wisdom on Nottingham/Lincoln? DD has had interviews at Sheffield and Leicester, and has an interview at Lincoln, having also applied to Lincoln and Nottingham, but we are a little confused about how the joint application works at this stage...

They state clearly that if you are shortlisted for interview by both, you just have one joint interview, and we are pretty sure her interview is just for Lincoln as it says 'at Lincoln Medical School' and certainly on TSR people have said they have interview invitations that mention both Nottingham and Lincoln.

However, she hasn't had a rejection from Nottingham. As we have heard of several people who have had rejections from Nottingham, so they are definitely informing people of this, the implication is that they could possibly invite her for interview further through the process...if it wasn't for the definite guidance that there is only one interview even if it is for both med schools. Clear as mud? Sorry about that!

Is anyone able to offer any clarity?

Monkey2001 · 11/01/2019 13:28

WellIDontKnow - welcome, we aren't ignoring you, but I don't know if we have any Lincoln applicants here. There are Nottingham people though, so hopefully someone will answer soon.

WellIDontKnow · 11/01/2019 13:42

Monkey2001 thank you :)
No worries - I wonder if Lincoln's application numbers are low!

HostessTrolley · 11/01/2019 15:16

Hi @WellIDontKnow

My d applied to Nottingham but not the Lincoln one, I don’t really know anything about it or about how the interviews are being done. It might be worth looking on the student room website to see if there’s any information on there x

WellIDontKnow · 11/01/2019 16:15

Thanks HostessTrolley, There aren't many Lincoln applicants on their either!

4catsham · 11/01/2019 18:26

Hi All,

Welcome to Quadratilla, great to hear about Southampton offer ,also welcome to ItsThe Kissing. It seems to be one long series of waiting...we ll all be experts and possibly very very patient at the end of this whole process 🤪!Hope Nightowlpossibly and Tinkobell that this weeks interviews went well for your prospective medics. After a long week of exams..the Liverpool interview came through so huge relief in my house.

No news on offers from Dds school, just a few things on TSR St Georges and St Andrews if i m remembering correctly from a late night visit when i should have been asleep and not trawling through TSR breaking all my rules on lates night and phone use🤣!!

Nightowlpossibly · 12/01/2019 02:41

4catsham- congrats on the Liverpool interview is that the last interview?

DD had Manchester, didn’t feel it went that well and actually found it harder than KIngs and BSMS. She didn’t really like it, and is doubtful she will get an offer anyway.

She is however very fortunate as she got an offer from BSMS! So she Currently has two offers in her pocket. She is of course delighted and relieved as are we!

I really hope some offers start coming through for everyone very soon, good luck everybody.

Monkey2001 · 12/01/2019 07:29

Wow, Nightowl, you must be bursting with pride, well done to your DD! Is she still waiting for 4th or is it now just a matter of choosing which is first choice and which is insurance?

Hope all of us will see similar success ovee the next month or two!

Tinkobell · 12/01/2019 09:40

Many congrats @Nightowl on your DC's offers, must feel like there's something concrete now to aim for. There's such a time span in this process; at DD's school there's a few with offers and many who aren't even interviewing until March - it's a slog! I think Imperial are the slowest. Got back from UEA late last night from last MMI which DD thought went pretty well. Hats off to UEA, they have been so super-organised with absolutely everything from open day to MMI's yesterday; lovely people too; you can't help but walk away with a great impression of them. It has been a contrast to a couple of others on DD's list.
DD pleased to be done for now.

Nightowlpossibly · 12/01/2019 13:37

Monkey2001- thank you I am very proud and pleased for DD. At the BSMS interview they were told that a small percentage of the candidates would be made an offer very quickly, and the majority would be told in March. So DD one of the lucky few to get an early offer. She is still waiting for UCL interview. Apparently they interview school leavers in feb/March. So could be a while before she hears from them, so not quite done yet, but enormous sense of relief and less pressure, as she really likes the two she has got. Do you know when you will hear from Cambridge?

Tinkobell- I agree this process is a slog. I think DD has been lucky that she has had 3 interviews all very close together and then 2 quick offers.so it has not been such a drawn out process for her. So like your DD, she glad to be done for the moment apart from UCL. UEA sounds promising; did your DD like it?

Does anyone know who are the quickest and slowest to give out offers.
As It looks like a few DCs are done with all their interviews.

Hopefully the wait will be over soon, and there will be a flurry of offers.
Before we know it we will be discussing choices and offer open days!

sluj · 12/01/2019 17:07

Im watching all of your stories with interest and nostalgia having been on a thread for 2016 entry. 😀
My DS got three offers then and is now in year 3 at UEA so I would be happy to share anything that might help about UEA if anyone needs it.
They have a very logical and organised programme for the MBBS. They were also the friendlies of the universities we visited . Even the "dinner lady" wished DS good luck with his interview and one of the campus security staff jumped in the back of the car to help us find a "secret" parking spot!

Mochi3 · 13/01/2019 14:00

Hi just joined the thread! Anybody heard back after interview with an offer from Bristol yet? DS had an interview in November and have not heard back and so far have not heard if anyone had any offers either ....:( the wait it’s excruciating since it has been like 6 weeks ..

Tinkobell · 13/01/2019 17:14

@Nightowl and @sluj - yep, so many pluses for UEA aside from the general feeling of friendliness and good organisation. DD prob most excited by the PBL/spiral learning format, peer group learning and emphasis on hands-on jobbing doctoring. We just thought the whole environment was highly supportive and focused on success; as a parent, I would have no concerns about DD thriving and enjoying UEA. But of course it's not MY choice it's hers and she should be so lucky as to get even one offer plus the grades; so resisting dreaming! Super @sluj to hear your DS is v happy at UEA....,what made him pick it?
