Medicine 2019

kaykay72 · 05/06/2018 16:32

Hi,

Does anyone here have a DC applying for medicine to start in 2019? It would be nice to meet others as we embark on uni visits, predicted grades, UKCAT etc

We’re in Kent, d is planning to visit kings, UCL, Nottingham, Sheffield and Newcastle at the moment. She really wanted to go look at Belfast but they want three A’s plus an A at AS level but won’t accept her additional qualification in place of this (despite it having a higher UCAS tarriff). We went to an open afternoon at BSMS which she liked more than she thought she would, so is pondering the BMAT.

I have two older kids (well, adults now), one of whom has just finished his masters, the other just completed his first year elsewhere, but medical applications are just so complicated in comparison to their experiences at this stage.

Hope to hear from others in the same boat :-)

Sorry - very scrambled! Start again: when your DD gets her BMAT results on Friday she can just tap the numbers for that and for her GCSEs into the formula and she'll probably be able to make a very good guess as to the likelihood of an interview. It's a very quick turnaround after that - the colleges get the invites sent very quickly, after the department has given the go-ahead, but the date should be on the departmental website.

Monkey2001 · 21/11/2018 11:24

@mimiasovitch try the college website. I just looked at Worcester and they have published theirs and say all interviews sent out in Nov, but did not specify for medicine. It is a 26 hour thing Sunday to Monday. Makes me glad DS only has a 2 hour one in Cambridge (if he gets through BMAT)

Thanks for your UKCAT/GCSE data which totally supports my theory so far, although I expect she is just all round bright!

Monkey2001 · 21/11/2018 11:28

Actually Mimi, it is a whole uni timetable. Medicine is noon Sunday 9th to 2:00 Momday 10th or noon Monday 10th to 2:00 Tuesday 11th.

medicmom · 21/11/2018 13:35

Glad about the interview @Nightowlpossibly you must be pleased.
@Monkey2001 ds got A* in maths but was in top 30% for ukcat!

Movingmountains · 21/11/2018 17:39

@Monkey2001 my DS got an A at GCSE and top 10% UKCAT 2950. Interestingly his highest score was VR and he got.a B in Eng Lang.

mimiasovitch · 21/11/2018 18:04

Thanks @Monkey2001. I'll have a look once I've asked her what college she applied to. I do pay attention honestly, but she's just so self sufficient most of the time that I let her her get on with it.

mimiasovitch · 21/11/2018 18:08

Well, looking at it at least it won't overlap with Sheffield, though she'll be away from home for a good few nights. I need to get used to that I suppose.

Starryskiesinthesky · 22/11/2018 11:37

Hi all, my son has just received interviews for Dundee and Glasgow - unfortunately on the same day! Glasgow says it won’t change the date so fingers crossed Dundee will! Anyone have any experience of this? Thanks.

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2018 11:56

Starryskiesinthesky - how frustrating!

The advice from Cambridge was that if there are dates you can't do, you need to tell them before they send out interviews as they cannot change them afterwards. Other people have changed Imperial dates, Sheffield has a system for asking for a different date.

If Dundee will not change, could you ask them whether they would be willing to swap if you find somebody willing to swap dates as there may be other people with clashes on TSR or mumsnet who would be willing to swap.

UCL have published their BMAT average score for this year. Not sure what it means for any of you, but in case you are interested......

2018 Average BMAT scores for UCL applicants

Section 1: 4.2

Section 2: 4.5

Section 3: 3.1A

May we remind candidates that we do not use a cut-off score for BMAT. Since the scores alone do not determine the outcome of an application, this is for guidance only.

Nightowlpossibly · 22/11/2018 17:58

Not sure what those figures mean for applications. Do they add them all up to get an average score? does that then give a cut off score for an interview?

Nervously waiting for bmat results here.

Good luck to everyone's DCs also waiting.

swingofthings · 22/11/2018 18:32

So that makes an average score of 16.8. I can't speak for other places but at bsms, they offer interviews to the top X scorers so the cut off is different each year but I think it tends to be over their average. Last year cut off was just under 17 I believe for those without contextual circumstances but then again my memory is a bit hazy. DD scored 17. 3. I do remember she was told before she got an interview that this was a good score for bsms.

swingofthings · 22/11/2018 18:33

Pressed too quickly! Good luck tomorrow to all those awaiting results.

Starryskiesinthesky · 22/11/2018 19:26

Thankfully Dundee were great and responded really quickly to an email just saying that they would delete the date picked and he could re-select a new date. Makes you wonder why Glasgow are so inflexible!

Monkey2001 · 22/11/2018 22:59

Shout out to those waiting for BMAT results possibly in 1 hour...... gulp......

HostessTrolley · 23/11/2018 00:11

Nothing yet, still pending

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2018 00:42

Yes, will have to wait! DS has inset day luckily. Lots of students on TSR stressing about getting results during a lesson. Shame they did not release at midnight.

oneteen · 23/11/2018 00:46

Good luck with BMAT results everyone !

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2018 09:32

Has anybody managed to get BMAT results yet? We can't get through, there must be a lot of very anxious applicants out there!

For when you do have results, averages are way down this year - S1 looks like just over 4! They do not publish straight averages, just distributions.

HostessTrolley · 23/11/2018 09:59

Keep refreshing, dd just managed to get into the site

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2018 10:00

Hmmm, 4.6,5.4,3A. Marginal for what DS wants, but averages are down. Pep talks going on!

HostessTrolley · 23/11/2018 10:12

5.7, 6.2, 3.5A

Much scratching of head about running out of time and guessing. Friend got over 8 on one section though Shock

Hopefully imperial back in the running, they also look at predicted grades and PS

ItsTheKissing · 23/11/2018 10:28

DSS 5.3 5.4 3A and is very disappointed with this. He wanted Oxford but think this will be too low. Does anyone know how to work this out in terms of scores for cut off?

Monkey2001 · 23/11/2018 10:30

@HostessTrolley she will definitely get an interview with those stats. If you look at the "explanation of results", only 7% nationally were in the 6+ bands for S1 and about 5% in the 6.5+ for S2, so she is comfortably in the top 10% of BMAT applicants. That is an excellent result!

Her friend is in the top 0.5%!
