NHS bursery student loans - how do students survive?

DD has an offer from Cardiff which means she qualifies for a Welsh NHS loan but then is only entitled to a very reduced student maintenance loan because they pay her fees.
The maintenance loan including 1k bursery doesnt cover her housing let alone anything else. We earn to much for her to get anything but the basic?

Generally patents help their adult children who are studying. A lot of medical students also do part time work.

I worked part time while studying, 90% of my fellow students all did too. Very common to get jobs in nursing homes and eventually bank nursing once you have enough experience.
So long as the job can have a bit f flexibility while you're on placements then it's not too difficult to work around uni commitments.

DD is doing OT , she seems to think she may not be able to fit in working with 1000 hours of placements etc. She is not work shy and has volunteered/worked since she was 12.
We will help her but was expecting her to get normal maintenance loan.

Ah sorry, I wrongly assumed it was nursing.

I think it's the same story though regardless of which area of healthcare you are studying, just try to find a flexible enough job and do 1 day at the weekend and a shift or 2 mid week. Then allows the additional day at the weekend (or mid week when on placement) and the other evenings for study. It is hard work and the health student do tend to have very little 'free' time unfortunately.

Hope she finds something suitable to help fund it Smile

She won’t have £27,000 of student debt so that’s an advantage. I would ask what other students do on the course. Do most live at home for example? What did they say on the open day or offer day? There must have been some advice about how this works! Is it worth doing this course away from home?

BubblesBuddy · 27/04/2018 20:25

She can elect not to work in Wales for 2 years after qualifying and take out normal student finance. Did you read about this option? I guess the fees issue makes working in Wales attractive, but then it’s more expensive for you. You pay one way or another! Obviously the people who work and live in Wales get a good deal if they live at home.

bruffin · 28/04/2018 00:50

Yes that is an option she knows about. At least Cardiff is fairly cheap place to live

It appears that you pay or your DD takes out a loan. OT pay isn’t wonderful so you would have to do the sums! It would also depend on the money a parent can afford too, which seems a bit unfair in my view.

Bank healthcare support work at the local hospital?

shakeyourcaboose · 28/04/2018 20:12

Agree bank work with local hospital/ social care/care home depending on what branch of OT she wants to do. This would help with immersion in the health care setting.
