Anyone have any experience of this particular course and of the university itself? DD very keen and it's the highest rated course provider on most lists. Thank you!

University is very intense. Partly because of its isolation and partly because of its size relative to the town itself. It's like a giant Oxbridge college.

I loved it albeit a looooong time ago Blush Ds went to an Open Day in October and hated it - for all the reasons I loved it. I couldn't fault his logic. He ended up not applying as his first choice is Edinburgh and even though he says the course at St Andrews is really good, his 2nd choice is Aberdeen and his thinking was that he would prefer Aberdeen to St Andrews so it would be a wasted choice.

Astrophysics there does have a really good reputation. A friend from Uni's son followed his dad to the Uni and studied Astrophysics.

Thank you, I think this is where open days are so helpful. No point having a great course if you're going to be thoroughly miserable while you're there.

My daughter started there last September studying English. She loves it. She says it is small and it is like living in a bubble but she has found lots to do. She is involved with quite a few societies and there seems to be lots of house parties going on as well as the stuff at the union to make up for the lack of night clubs . She says the academic family scheme is great and very supportive. She enjoys the real mix of nationalities that are in St Andrews and always seemed to be talking to people from America, Bulgaria, Norway and Italy to name but a few over the Christmas holidays.

My alma mater - many moons ago. Absolutely loved it - the most beautiful place on earth. But couldn't persuade any of mine to even go and have a look.

I absolutely adored my time there (10+ yrs ago!) not a single regret. I would say I am a total country mouse and wasn’t phased at all by the only three streets aspect-I was just thrilled I could walk to a night out and my friends’ houses! It’s very much a societies, house parties, dinner parties and a ‘black tie event every night of the week if you so wish’ type of place. If you want big city nights out on a regular basis it maybe won’t suit.
