Writtle University College, Essex, has very good equine degrees

billybagpuss · 15/12/2017 15:43

Hartpury college in Gloucester

Royal agricultural University and Myerscough are leading colleges in this field. There are better jobs in the racing industry than a livery yard so aim high!

I did equine degree and masters at Nottingham Trent. I had my horse there with me too. Don't have a horsey job but do work in animal nutrition which I love, there's not many jobs out there (that aren't livery yards/grooms) so to be honest it would probably be worth going for a wider animal degree (animal science etc) although that depends entirely on what she wants to do!

There are lots of jobs with racehorses. Studs and stud management, working in racing yards, management of racecourses, physio for horses and lots more.

I can think of five people who did an equine degree. None have ended up working with horses. How about an apprenticeship if she wants to go the horse route?

There are a number of options for equine degrees my uni offers three: Equine therapy and rehabilitation - prepares students to set up as therapists (sports massage/physio etc) and most go that route or to work in/run a larger theray centre - lots of these starting to appear around the country with water treadmills/spas/ swimming pools
Equine Training and Management - Aimed at those wanting a more traditional riding/teaching/grooming career. We focus on industry links and work experience and making sure students have relevant industry experiences.
Equine Behaviour & Welfare - Aimed at those wanting to work in charity sector or in the growing behavioural industry.

There are also degrees in general equine science, equine nutrition etc.

The equine industry is extensive and diverse, and a range of transferable skills are also covered. I have pals with equine degrees who work in insurance, sales and manufacturing all with an equine bent.

I know two people who studied Equine Science BSc at Moreton Morell. They were at the college at different times over the past six years.
Now one is with a racing stable in Newmarket and the other works in a German zoo. They both loved their time at Moreton (and babysat for us local Mums to earn a bit of spending money Grin).
Next open day 10th of February I think.
