What essentials are needed for uni?

DD has a place at Oxford starting in October.

Apologies if this subject has been done to death but we are newbies to the whole university experience! We are now starting to think about what she will need to take - college room / catered.

Will her college send her a list of requirements? She's really keen to buy bedding (mattress protector / pillows / quilt + cover / sheets?? Or is any of this provided??) and towels plus ..................

Any suggestions or links to previous threads would be very welcome!

Definitely essential, but I am considering just a protector as DS is really warm and has no heating in his room even in winter; the toppers are often memory foam which will make him waaay too hot.

LadyinCement · 23/08/2017 13:04

I bought one off Groupon the other day, not too pricey.

hoyhoy44 · 24/08/2017 16:15

just picked up a a cheap mattress protector as comfort is not an issue for dd, she will sleep anywhere ! now deciding what towels are the best, dd plans to swim at uni and use gym so think maybe microfibre travel towels have better chance of drying for her !

Horsemad · 24/08/2017 16:40

Microfibre towels are a brilliant idea.

I've had two DC go into self catered halls at different unis. They were both very over heated and even with radiators off they had windows open all year round. Mattress protectors were supplied at one uni but not the other. They never had "toppers".
I sent two sets of bedding but what they found was that when on the rare occasion they washed the bedding at the laundrette they just dried it and put it straight back on so the second set of bedding came home unused.
A large sturdy laundry bag was very useful for storing dirty washing and then carting it to the laundry.
Both of mine found the laundry the biggest pain and not, as I expected, the cooking / food shopping.

A George Foreman grill! Even if they are catered they come in very handy for toasties etc.

LapdanceShoeshine · 24/08/2017 17:22

Hammam towels might be a better bet than microfibre (much bigger for a start)

Although having said that the Mountain Warehouse giant ones aren't a lot smaller & are currently half price plus an extra 20% off!

hoyhoy44 · 24/08/2017 17:42

we have a few old ones from decathlon which are softer more towel like material but still dry quick and are compact

doglover · 24/08/2017 21:11

Our DD received her Oxford College list today. We need to get pretty much everything (as expected) but certainly hadn't bargained for a FRIDGE for her room?! Really?!

OP posts:
hoyhoy44 · 24/08/2017 21:28

a fridge ? i know nothing about Oxford, hopefully someone can help with list. one of dcs friend at Cambridge bought a freezer for her room but i think that was due to her been Vegan and eating multiple frozen bananas a day !
does it have to be a proper one or are they allowed a small one ?

doglover · 24/08/2017 21:31

No idea! DD is out tonight but will find out more tomorrow! I assume it is a small one for her room but am not convinced this is really essential .......

Pah! They get a fridge in their room at Nottingham University, apparently Wink

OddBoots · 24/08/2017 22:16

Strange how they are all different, fridges are on the 'banned in rooms' list ds got.

Squirrills · 25/08/2017 09:21

Horsemad I remember that from looking around Nottingham, big rooms with a mini fridge under the desk. Most places won't allow them though.
They will get an accommodation handbook, probably online and they never read it. It will give details of what electricals are permitted.

DS is taking one this (second) year as he is off campus in a private let with one small fridge between five.

Horsemad · 25/08/2017 09:32

That would sell it to me Squirrills Grin

hoyhoy44 · 25/08/2017 16:05

i know extension leads have already been mentioned but i have picked up dd a multiple usb charger plug as most of her gadgets have usb charges it easy just the have one plug for them

Ttbb · 25/08/2017 16:35

Laptop and textbooks. The rest isn't really important, there is a good chance that she will loose a lot of it/end up with other people's stuff anyway.

hoyhoy44 · 25/08/2017 19:06

for textbooks is the newest up to date edition vital ?

GetAHaircutCarl · 26/08/2017 08:54

hoy in some subjects, yes ( e.g. Law). Students can check with their departments on this.

Also, in English a specific edition/translation is often specified.

Horsemad · 26/08/2017 11:54
