Majority A/B grades at GCSE

DS is looking at Uni for September 2018. A uni he is interested in has asked for BTEC grades which he should get but also for "Majority A/B (7/6) Grades at GCSE including minimum Grade B/6 in Mathematics and English Language".
He only has majority A/B if we only tell them about his top 6 results. Does the UCAS form require them to mention all GCSE and equivalents?
How will this uni work out the "majority"? Will those applicants with C and D results automatically be rejected?
Any advice would be gratefully received. Many thanks.

You need to require the results of all public examinations taken on the UCAS form.

declare not require

Thank you Eye. Sad for him as he is doing so much better now studying the same as he wants to do at uni.

Is he doing any A levels?

Practicalpam · 21/06/2017 17:29

Yes. 1 A level plus BTEC D*DD

Yes he need to declare them all. TBH they'll be expecting 9 or 10 GCSEs - putting only 6 down will appear unusual. Worth a go though if his predictions are stellar.

Thank you titchy. I did the first year of Access courses and got in to uni through an interview day, so this UCAS business is all very new.

Lots of applicants only have 8 GCSEs - not 9/10, so 8 are fine.
It's probably less a mathematical calculation and more getting a sense of his general academic ability and strengths. BTECs are usually done by candidates who are less strong academically and they develop different skills to A levels, so for some degrees BTECs are not a good preparation and you need to look back to GCSEs to get a better sense of aptitude. Assuming this is an academic, not a vocational degree, if the A level is academic that will help and, even if the GCSEs are not mathematically there they may require a certain A level grade.
If there were circumstances affecting the GCSE performance, they should be mentioned in the reference.

What Uni is this, OP?
I suspect OP is under-estimating how many successful applicants have some duff GCSEs.
By Sept2018 some entry requirements may have changed, too.
