Bristol university accommodations

We're going to be applying for accommodation at the Uni of Bristol for DS next week, any tips please?

He's not sure whether to go for catered or self catered or even which hall to go for. He's sociable but also likes a quiet environment to work in.

TIA.

DD has her last exam on Tuesday. Has a very fun and busy summer lined up but she's really looking forward to Bristol and praying she gets somewhere in Stoke Bishop

Okkay, one has put Wills first (where their sister went). Other (as sensibly does not want to be where his twin goes) will apply for something similar but not the same although they could end up anywhere as they know they won't necessarily get first choice.

dd is considering Bristol as insurance next year. One of her concerns is that they don't guarantee accommodation for insurance. How likely would it be that she'd end up having to find her own place?

My sons have not applied for accommodation at their insurance offers. I assume they would probably find somewhere if they end up going there but I am not sure.

I went there a long time ago and lived in city centre accomodation - worked just fine as I was near lectures! My Stoke Bishop coursemates used to come over for tea and toast between lectures too Grin it was great. Plus we had a cleaner included in our rent price not too grim!!

My DD went on insurance a few years ago and it was very difficult not knowing what she would get, if anything.

They invited her to a meeting of students in a similar position to make friends and link up to house hunt. This was to take place in the September and we were on holiday for the first part of it. However for DD it didn't matter. They contacted her and said they had found her a shared room in Wills. I had strongly advised her to negotiate a gap Year if she had had to find a student house. All the ones near the university have long gone by September so heaven knows where she would have ended up.

The room in Wills was quirky but there was only one bed in it. Hers. The other girl had to walk through DDs room to get to her room. DD was grateful for it. She would have hated a house nowhere near other students and not be part of a hall set up to make friends and be part of the socialising.

I would think twice about Bristol
as insurance if you are remotely choosy over accommodation. It may be ok but it may not. If the number of UCAS applications continues to decline there may be less pressure on accommodation in the future but if Bristol continues to be popular- who knows?

That's a worry, thanks. I guess I'd better start threads about other universities! Useful to know.

I do think it's a good university however - my daughter went and the twins hope to go (if they get the grades) as their first choice.
My son went to Reading via clearing and started out in a family's house which had 2 students on the top floor but that is the risk you take when you get in late. He did move into halls in the January.

My DD thought it was a great university. Any decent university has problems re accommodation with insurance students or clearing. You should ask them for an up to date position due to less young people applying to university. You may, of course, never need it as insurance! If your child must have an en suite, be in a certain hall, then insurance cannot ensure tour DC gets that. However, I do not think anywhere will that is a sought-after university.

@Lucysky2017 my son hasn't either - Bristol is his firm but his insurance don't let anybody apply who has it as an insurance place until results day. I'm not happy about that.
