It's sophomores. They're second year students. First years are freshmen. Third years are juniors. Fourth years are seniors.

Unusual to start at college in US before 18, which means graduates are usually 22+.

I started at US grad school (ie, having graduated from uni (in UK)) at 21 & that was treated as worthy of remark. Would have been perfectly usual here (esp in Scotland, where starting uni at 17 was entirely usual).

BellaBear · 14/03/2007 15:43

i think (but relying on memories of judy blume etc here) that it goes up to 12th grade because of kindergarten. so UK year 13 = US 12th grade

A guide to the whole US system

Kindergarten (start when you are 5, usually 1/2 day), Grade 1 - Grade 5 : all in same school
Middle School : grade 6 - 8, (new school)
High School: grades 9 - 12, also known as freshman, sophmore, junior, & senior (new school)

Most finish high school at 18, but you can start school early (I did, thus finished at 17) or late (and finish at 19), skip grades, be held back a grade & repeat grades.

Then College/University again freshman, sophmore, junior, senior.

it's basically the same in Canada. though we don't tend to call them sophomores etc. mostly it's just freshies then 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th year.
as for the rest, it's basically the same. but it really depends on where you are. when i grew up it was 1-6 elementary school, 7 - 8 junior high then 9 - 12 high school. My DH went to junior high for grade 5 - 9 and that was in the same city as me!

RTKangaMummy · 14/03/2007 17:41

in Toronto

Thanks

Feel I should also add that the subjects studied are different. At my high school it split into those who were going to attend uni and those that weren't. As I was going to Uni, I studied English, a science (biology, physics, chemistry, etc), History, a language, and math every year for the 4 years. We also had things like PE, Health and one or two other optional courses to take.

USAUKMum · 14/03/2007 20:03

Also, although I did a Computer Science degree. At Uni I was also required to do English, History (for 1 yr) and then choose about 1/2 of courses which some had to be Math, but others where Philosophy, psychology etc

hana · 14/03/2007 20:05

some places have junior high school , grades 7 8 9
then high school for 10 11 and 12, you are usually 18 when you graduate and leave highschool
