Starting A levels again?

Hi

I posted a thread recently called 'a a bit of a mess' about my DD struggling with A levels because of depression. She had now dropped out and although that is the best thing for her health, she doesn't want to give up on her plans for her future.

There seem to be two potential routes:

  1. Do A levels again - she would keep two subjects and change the third.
  2. Do a BTEC extended diploma.

She would prefer to do A levels again but is open to either course.

She hasn't spoken to her college yet - she needs a bit more time before that - but from what she has been told she 'can't' do A levels after 19. As I have found out that isn't true I guess it just means they won't be funded. Does anyone have experience of doing A levels independently, or via distance learning. And the costs of possibly redoing them in college?

She will get just under £3000 for her 18th birthday from an investment I set up for her - she is willing to use that to pay to her the qualifications she needs but we will also help her as best we can (which probably won't be much)

Any advice appreciated.

We saw the A level chap. DD is 75% certain that she is going to do A BTEC in forensic science starting sept. She may also try to finish one of A levels at the same time.

She is also much happier - she went riding for the first time in a year and she was buzzing afterwards.

If vet nursing or similar is still the goal PLEASE check how suitable a Forensic Science BTEC will be for admission beforehand.

Forensic Science does seem a bit of a leap away from where she wants to be. It is very "in" as a subject at the moment but nay not be the most relevant to her goal. Also beware of tutors wanting to recruit in order to ensure their course runs. Do they offer , for example , Applied Science? Otherwise would she be willing to look at apprenticeships or perhaps volunteering with animals.

Its actually forensic and analytical science. But dd is planning to contact them tomorrow to check

It must be such a relief that she is feeling more positive. As an example, RVC do accept Btecs/level 3 but seem to be looking for Applied Science or Animal Management

Might be worth having a look at a few others before she commits herself.

Is there any way she would consider doing her Maths if she's already done half of it and got either an A or a B?

Hi red, the plan is to redo the A2 component of her maths alongside the first year of the BTEC. then do the same with the biology in the second year. All things being well.
