Trinity College Dublin or Manchester?

DD is leaning towards Trinity. I have it in my head that employers will look more favourably upon Manchester. She is planning to do a Classical Civilisation/Ancient History type course.

Plus of course there is Brexit to consider.

Anyone have any words of wisdom for me?

DD2 went to TCD instead of Sussex - she had offers for both. It was an amazing experience for her life wise and educationally. Employers do look upon it as a good choice. She is a journalist on a major UK newspaper now.

DD2 lived out after the first year in halls and shared a flat with two other friends. It wasn't a cheap experience but it was still much less than going to uni in the UK. Nothing will change Brexit wise for at least two years anyway.

If she gets an offer from TCD she should jump at it - they are much harder to come by than they used to be. Dublin and Ireland in general is a lovely place to visit and live.

Best of luck! Flowers

3Nations As a non Irish student she will get a room in halls for the first year. It's resident Irish students who don't.

TCD's not at all posh. DD2 mixed with Irish students from all walks of life and learned a lot along the way about people less privileged than herself (eg some students had never been abroad) Her Irish friends were all welcoming and she made life long friendships too.

Ah, Trinity has a jokey reputation for being posh, but it's not at all - it's pretty diverse for a university, there's a high proportion of international students and a well-established access programme for kids from disadvantaged backgrounds. And I certainly didn't find it cliquey; I completely blossomed there having been a very quiet, introverted schoolgirl.

I'd go back there in a heartbeat...

My sd is in Trinity and we are not even a little bit posh. We live in Dublin so not expensive to send her there. There is an element of snobbery in Ireland around Trinity but we are a nation of begrudgers so you don't get to take it too seriously. UCD would have a better reputation for some courses than Trinity. Dublin is expensive but it's also a good city for young people. Residence is about a 45 min walk to Trinity all through a nice area. Bus routes good. All very central.

I went to Manchester (Theol+RS). As did my DD (Classics, Latin and Greek not classical civilisations), and her husband (PPE or something similar). We were all happy with that.

But a few years in Dublin - that's got to be a good thing.
