Relative on wrong course, fees paid.

My dn enrolled on what he thought was a BSc 18 months ago, halfway through he's found out it's a hnc which wouldn't qualify him for a job in the field he wants to be in. It's something to do with a change in course structure.

He's already paid out fees etc and is going back in sept on a BSc.

Can he get a refund on fees?.

I never had any of this at uni and I've never heard of it happening before.

It would depend on whether the course materials and application process made it clear that it was an hnc or not. What was it that led your nephew to believe it was a Bec and how did he only realise part way into the 2nd term that it was not?

An older architect put him onto it via his old head of year, it was sufficient for him to get a job but now somethings changed and it's not enough now.

His df has a hnd too & runs an architect business on it.

He told us it was a BSc so must've genuinely believed it to be true.

Has he checked with his new course, having done half an HND should mean he wouldn't have to start in the first year. I know quite a few people who have done this in a related field

Ok well it was his responsibility to check what course he was on not his head of year or anyone else. He will also have had to register at the uni on the course so I can't really believe he didn't know till now.

Secondly it's not the unis fault the professional requirements have changed.

Thirdly if he's got, or will get, an HNC he'll probably be able to go straight into the third year of the BSc so it hasn't been wasted.

He's stopped doing it for some reason. I asked if he was getting a refund.

I know it's his responsibility. He's having a few life lessons which I hope will be learned from.

However I suspect the reality is that he didn't get good enough grades for the BSc originally, was offered an HNC instead, and is now using that to meet the entry requirements of the BSc.

He should have some sort of paperwork that shows what he (a) got an offer for from UCAS, and (b) enrolled on.

I'd ask him to dig that out - it may be that he didn't read it properly. If the university has genuinely misrepresented what it was that he was applying for, then he may have recourse via the courts - but in most cases, it's the student not having read the information they were sent.
