Should I speak to teacher again? (long)

My ds is 7 in May. He is in Primary 2 (Scotland). He loves numbers and seems very bright. At the last parents evening in November his teacher agreed with us that he is very capable at maths. Her words were "his eyes light up when we do maths".

We mentioned our concern that the maths he was doing seemed a little simple for him. She said that if he wanted harder sums she would give them to him. He has never had anything harder. I'm not sure if she was waiting for him to go to her and ask. I know he wouldn't do this as he is the type just to do as he is told and just get on with it.

I was doing some sums with him and he knows how to add up in HTU and more and understands the concept of H T Us. He can add carrying over and take away by exchanging. He is also quite good at mental maths although not if put on the spot. Eg, he told me that we had 19 mins before his swimming lesson, (it was 4.41) When I asked him how he knew he told me there is 60mins in an hour and 40 + 20 is 60 and take one away. Another example was 16 + 15, I told him he could lay it out if he wanted but he said I don't need to it's 31 and explained why. He then went on to do many other sums like this. He also knows his 2, 3, 5, 10, 11 x tables.

At school his maths is simple addition up to 20 and taking away up to 20. Should we arrange another meeting and explain what he is capable of or should we just leave it so we don't look like pushy parents?

Is it Heineman (sp?) maths he is doing at school? If so, there is an extension book, which is basically the same concepts but harder, I think. I have 2 DSs, and the one in P6 is good at maths, so for as long as I can remember (and I'm sure it started in P2) he's done the regular work, then just gets on with the extension book. HTH

Have just realised this is in the wrong section - will put it in Primary.

Not sure what maths he is following. SPMG I think - but not sure.
