c£450 per month, x2. Too scary to add it up for the year!

S/C en.suite Portsmouth £152 p.w. Only place in UK that does this course hence moving to other end of country Sad

£6960 this year for en-suite catered at Lancaster Uni for my son. He goes relatively late, 1st October is start of Freshers Week.

Notso · 07/09/2016 13:47

I'm clueless about university but DD is 16 and so far wants to go after a-levels.
Do parents pay for accommodation?

electricflyzapper · 07/09/2016 13:51

We are looking at roughly £5000 for ds1 (uncatered) plus £50 a week for food and expenses, and over £7000 for ds2 (catered). Not yet sure how much ds2 should get for expenses as it is his first year.

BennyTheBall · 07/09/2016 13:52

Ours is about £4500, self catered.

We are paying the rent and he is paying living expenses. This seems to be the normal arrangement amongst our friends.

electricflyzapper · 07/09/2016 13:56

Notso there is a loan the student can apply for, but it does not anywhere near cover accommodation and living costs, well, it doesn't for us anyway, but dh is a high earner. I believe it varies according to parental income. And it is a loan, not a grant as it was in the old days.

Yes, parents make up the shortfall.

£3930 a year at Loughborough. We do have a RG uni near enough to commute but it doesn't offer the course. There are no other universities in the country that offer the course to the level that L'boro do.

Myredrose · 07/09/2016 14:03

£6400 a year uncatered in Bristol.

Notso · 07/09/2016 14:38

Thanks electricflyzapper does the loan get added to the loan for the tuition fees?
DH earns over tax threshold so I assume DD wouldn't get much.

Two of my DC's friends Mum's started courses at a local University last year and have been telling me how much better off they are now. Both were SAHMs, one married, one a single parent. I was a bit puzzled as to how they were better off.

Just over £6000 economy ensure, self catered, about 15 minutes walk off campus.

Dunlurking · 07/09/2016 18:47

£3783 for s/c hall on campus at Warwick - 39 week let. Ds extremely happy as he says his budget now shows him in credit by £100 at the end of his first year!

StillRabbit · 07/09/2016 19:27

dotdotdotmustdash · 10/09/2016 09:24

China on a scholarship which pays for tuition, accommodation and a food allowance. We pay for flights and a bit of extra spending. It's only for one year though!

NapoleonsNose · 10/09/2016 09:40

£5346 self catered ensuite at Reading, 38 week contract. She could have gone cheaper but was adamant that she wouldn't share a bathroom with anybody!

kath6144 · 10/09/2016 16:17

Can I ask advise on giving a weekly/monthly food allowance when self catering?

DS will get minimum loan, so we will top up hall fees. He has had a retail job, so will use that money for beer/social etc. He is hoping to get a job in Uni city, but in the meantime, we will give him an allowance. It will essentially cover only food. He is on campus so no uni travel.

Phone contract is 7.50 & he pays that already. Travel home will be
