Cardiff University ( no accommodation available)

My DS got better grades than expected and decided to apply to University of Cardiff through adjustment. He rang them very early on results day and they gave him a place and verbally said as he was so early there would be guaranteed accommodation. Subsequent emails were rather vague.
Today he had an email to say they were full apart from any cancellations and asked him to look into private accommodation. A couple of links provided but no real help given.
He doesn't really know what to do. Will start ringing around tomorrow but this has left him feeling rather fed up and worried and he has even spoken about deferring or applying again next year.
Has anyone any experience of this. Should he leave it and hope for a cancellation. Doesn't want to sign up for private and then miss an opportunity for halls and would he be sharing with first years in private accommodation - possibly not?

That's great news! What a relief!

Fab news!! It's scary...
As I said further down the thread my Dd is going to be in Liberty Court( looks like Cardiff met put lots of their 1st year there as they are in partnership)
It was a bit more than we wanted to pay however Dd is chuffed with the ensuite and 4ft bed that she wouldn't have had if she had gone into the original halls we chose ( went through clearing so not much choice)
However so far they seem very professional and I feel she will be really safe there
She has joined the Facebook page for her halls as has her flat and room no
She is now looking forward to some big nights out in Cardiff!

I slept in a dorm with 25 others my first weeks at Cardiff. Then moved to a private house.

Justaweeone yes they were very polite and professional when I spoke to them. I hope your DD settles well. I also have DD starting Birmingham uni this year and she is staying in Liberty Gardens which Birmingham uni use as partner halls. A coincidence they are both now with Liberty.

Tell her she'll have a whale of a time.

It's my hometown Grin

I go to Cardiff and liberty living halls are really nice. They are a lot nicer than the uni halls, so although you pay more you do kind of get what you pay for, and the city in general is cheap. My halls were awful in first year.
I dont know if you can leave liberty without paying the full year(or if you'd want to) but after a week or so there are normally spare rooms in the university halls, in case anyone else has the same predicament Smile

charliethebear · 01/09/2016 00:41

Although they were really fun! I dont want to put anyone off haha, I just had to get past the initial smell of the stairs 😷

justaweeone · 01/09/2016 07:02

Thanks MUM I think she'll love it!
CHARLIE you have to sign up for the year but it looks really nice and now that she knows her room number she has found some of her flat mates via a closed Facebook group.
Any tips regarding Cardiff gratefully received.
