I think the course is the most important thing and you wouldn't get to find out anything about the course or related facilities on a random tour
I keep saying this on threads in here: there is a LOT of information on university Department websites which gives you the detail of the course - compulsory core modules, the range of options, staff interests and general Departmental activity. Of course, we always put this in our Open Day talks, but going by some students' reactions when they arrive ("Oh, I didn't know I would have to do ...X") it doesn't sink in for some people.
Although you do have to navigate some university websites with some cunning - particularly post-1992 (former polys) who generally approach university websites as if they were package holiday brochures, and spend a lot of time advertising. You need to find their Departmental websites: usually under the "About Us" menu.
You want information, not fluff, so you need to find the School or Department website. Have a look at course structure, focus, staff research interests (as they'll generally teach in those areas), resource support, support staff (lab assistants, technical teaching team, and so on). I know our website is both outward facing for intending applicants, and the place where we post day to day course & module "housekeeping" stuff. So a visitor to our website would get a reasonable sense - in broad terms - of what it would be like being a student with us.
Then have a look at the Student Union/Guild website to get a sense of the range & activities of student societies. Similarly, the Sports Union website.
So you can do a virtual tour. But a physical visit is also necessary to get a sense of where you're going to spend 3 years growing up!
