Anyone studying or qualified in Radiography?

I am doing an access to health course which entails psychology, sociology, maths & Biology (I wanted to do midwifery but have changed my mind) and want to study Radiography. Someone mentioned I might have to do a GCSE in Physics. Is this right?

not really no, A girl on my access to health course got a place at University of Central England on radiography with 12 credits.

which uni are you looking at applying to?

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 25/01/2007 21:19

Hi tiredemma. It will be Cardiff Uni. I spoke to the admissions tutor and he mentioned student with a GCSE in physics would have priority over those who haven't. He mentioned something about a double science award (I have no idea what he meant. I am 36) or doing GCSE physics . Maybe I should consider something else . I wasn't particularly good at physics in school.

tiredemma · 25/01/2007 21:27

thats bad- I mean the whole point of the access course is to aid those without GCSE's.

Double science was new when i sat my Gcse's ( im 29)

cant think of anything else that could help im afraid. Any other health career interest you???

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 25/01/2007 21:39

What exactly is double-science? Is that a GCSE each in TWO science subjects? I have no idea

OP posts:
tiredemma · 25/01/2007 21:46

I dont really know, I was booted off science at school.

I agree sally- the shit that goes with it all does my head in. I love placements, had fantastic feedback on my placement, but I really struggle academically, and while i realise the importance of theory- a lot of it is just a waste of time.
I look around in Physiology and evryone just gets it, and I think ' Am i stupid?' -!!!!

Im sure it will get worse, im dreading yr2. Just want to be a nurse ( but not have to study!! Ha! as if!)

I know deep down that I will never give up, I just realy doubt my abilities and would rather not be a nurse than be a shit one.

Thnaks for posting, your posts give me a boost!

Blandmum · 26/01/2007 07:29

Double science GCSE.....you study Chemistry, Physics and Biology and get two Gcses at the end. the average out all your marks and you get two C grades, two B grades , Two A grades....whatever you average out at.

Hate to tell you, but they have changed it again!

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 13:35

Martianbishop - I heard they scrapped the Double-science award. My access tutor said I have more chance of getting a place on the course if i do GCSE physics. Can't remember much about physics from school . Are you a radiographer?

sallystrawberry/tiredemma - a few girls on my access course are hoping to go into nursing. is the course really difficult. It sounds like its getting you both down a bit.

Are you guaranteed a Job at the end of the course?
Good luck to you both. I am sure you do really well.

OP posts:
Blandmum · 26/01/2007 13:38

No, I'm a science teacher!

My neice is a radiographer.

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 13:41

Do you know if the training is really difficult? . I question whether I will be able to do it.

AS for the Physics, My local college doesn't run GCSE physics and I can't find a college that does. Do the OU do Physics? It probably only degree level though isn't it?

OP posts:
tiredemma · 26/01/2007 13:42

its hard to say whether its 'difficult' or not, its just so intense. I feel extremely stressed with the workload, its not unmanagable, its just that in order to do it, you have to make sacrifices.
My sacrifices at the moment are my family, it takes the enjoyment out of the course when i cant find five minutes for my lovely, supportive dp, or cant find time to spend with my boys.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE my course and really deep down would never give it up, just wish it was a teensy bit easier!

tiredemma · 26/01/2007 13:43

Physics- the very word makes me shudder. I really could not grasp it at all.

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 13:51

tiredemma - how old are your kids? mine are only 5 and 1 so realistically, i don't know if i can do it.

As for the Physics, I can't remember much about it from school. Maybe I should think of doing something else? Any suggestions? I don't fancy nursing or midwifery, but I am interested in health so want to do something in this field.

SecondhandRose · 26/01/2007 13:53

hurtwife is a radiographer, will give her a call mind you she is just moving house so may be a bit stressful at the mo.

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 13:55

Thanks SeconHandRose. Whenever you get a chance to talk to her or when she gets a chance (sounds like she's busy).

Much appreciated.

It can be exceptionally hard to find a night school class in physics (I have also taught adult ed). The OU doesn't do GCSEs. Have you thought about doing an access course to get you in, rather than the more conventional GCSEs and A levels?

There is a lot of physics on the course, so if you hate physics I would have thought you'd find it tough.

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 13:59

MB - I am doing an Access course at the moment but origianlly I wanted to do midwifery but changed my mind. This is why I need to do GCSE Physics as well as complete my access to health course.

OP posts:
Blandmum · 26/01/2007 14:05

Oh, right, sorry about that.

If I were you I'd contact the nearest school and ask them if they know of anyone offering physics as a night class.

If that doesn't get you anywhere , could you pay for a tutor? And then sit the exam as an external candidate at the school?

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 14:07

I was thinking the same thing about contacting the schools.

As for private tutor. Where would I find one?

OP posts:
Blandmum · 26/01/2007 14:09

Again I'd ask the school, a member of staff may well tutor in the evenings (again, I've done a bit of this in the past)

I'd offer to cyber tutor you, but I'm a biology specialist!

ChloeAndDeclansMumma · 26/01/2007 14:13

Thanks MB. I will contact the school. I have to be honest, I find Biology quite difficult so I imagine Physics to even harder.

Maybe I should think of doing something that doesn't involve any Science subjects. Any suggestions?

OP posts:
tiredemma · 26/01/2007 14:19

I was going to suggest physiotherapy but then you said that you struggled with Biology, so that may be a problem. Most health related courses have an element of science attatched to them.

I hated science at school, but now biology FASCINATES me, its my fave lesson ( well Physiology and anatomy IYKWIM)

can i ask what has put you off nursing or midwifery??
