Is it worth kids going to uni these days?

we wont be paying fees, we're in Scotland

ds studied really hard and has got unconditional offer for a good uni

but all I read about is graduates who cant find work

so.....should we really be encouraging him to try to get a job or an apprenticeship?

theres nothing particular he has always wanted to do and his degree is in social sciences which hopefully will give him a broad range of skills to find employment with

3 children 3 different experiences;
Eldest son attended university and graduated with a BS in Computer Science degree, of his graduating class he is the only one who found work in his actual field earns CAD $66K (not really enough to get on the property ladder).
Middle daughter attended a big name university graduated with distinction BScPsychology. Never found work in that field worked in real estate and ended up teaching yoga. currently SAHM.
Youngest son attended a trades college, graduated with a diploma in Instrumentation, earned his red seal once the minimum hours were completed in the field and earns CAD$ 75-100K based on OT (purchased his own home within 2 years of work).
Education is never wasted but sometimes you need a different skill set to tide you over when the uni degree isn't opening doors fast enough.

This thread is interesting. I have one DS at Uni now and one doing AS levels. He can't decide what degree to do and I'm concerned in case he chooses the wrong one as it's an expensive mistake.

His problem is that whilst he's good at all his A level subjects, he's not really passionate about them.
We live in the back of beyond, so not a great job market. He says he wants to go to Uni to better his chances but I just wish he knew what he wanted to do...

If you do t have to pay fees you should encourage kids to go as you are in a position many can only dream of!
