Summer residential intro courses STEM subjects for yr 11 student

Does anyone have any pointers for a student in France who is bilingual... plans to do HE in the UK, knows it will be STEM probably Engineering... and wants to spend some of his summer getting to know the various fields of study open to him?

He is only in yr 11 in France (Seconde).

Parents very keen that he goes to a good uni and I suspect that even the name of the institution chosen for the summer course is going to be important.

I am finding it hard for his age group. So far, found smallpeice trust with some interesting courses but they are all quite short and perhaps too specialised (marine technology, Rail Solutions Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Biomaterials).

If anyone knows of an organisation that might help I would be very grateful

You could also look at Smallpeice courses (this is the correct spelling for it) though many will be booked already.

This is a tricky age. Most French parents seem to choose Explo @ Yale for this age group.

Thanks everyone. Jeanne, we've looked at Smallpeice Trust, and there are a few possibilities but I was looking for more choice if possible. Veg, thanks! they're going to love that! , and thanks also BoboChic. We have asked them if they are open to going to the US and not had a decision from them yet -- there seems to be a lot on offer there and the Yale thing will also very much appeal to this highly aspirational family.

Some universities offer summer schools e.g. www.imperial.ac.uk/be-inspired/global-summer-school/ - it's not cheap mind.

Do be wary of various companies create summer schools that look a lot like they are affiliated with a university, but aren't. This is particularly common in Oxford and Cambridge, where they will frequently hire spaces from the colleges over the summer, and take on a few undergraduates on low wages, but their programmes are neither vetted by nor endorsed by the relevant university, and there's no guarantee of quality.

Thanks, right -- duly noted. Yes I have seen those courses where they make it look like it's Oxford or Cambridge-run but isn't. Some are quite expensive too! Thanks for all the pointers, there's plenty in there to set me in the right direction.

My DSS2 did the LIYSF programme at Imperial and loved it but it was for Premiere age and up.

Etrust are worth a look but may well be full by now.

DS1did a Smallpeice course at UCL, he loved it and would highly recommend .
