Royal Holloway vs Lancaster?

It's decision time again and my DC is trying to choose between Lancaster and Royal Holloway for Literature. Does anyone have a DC at either? The courses at both look excellent, but I imagine the student experience would be quite different. All thoughts welcome!

Lancaster uni is rated a lot higher generally than Royal Holloway if that is relevant to you.

Ds did offer holder day at RHL yesterday with dh and found the international students around were european rather than asian. DH is Asian, Ds mixed race and they were very much in a minority. It wasn't a problem. Dh very flattered when someone asked him if he was there for a course in his own right! Having said that ds decided the course wasn't what he was hoping for so can strike that off his list. Would definitely go to the offer holder day if I was you.

Yes, I have been there. I am not saying it is not pleasant. I am saying that as a city it is not Leeds, Bristol, Newcastle or Manchester. It is small and compact and attractive with reasonable arts but this is not necessarily what every student wants. I have no doubt that students who went there liked it, but they didn't compare their university experience with any other large university city. They presumably wanted a smaller city and possibly access to the countryside. Other students just don't want this. They may want Prem football for example. Or a massive music scene. I can see it has more to offer than Egham but..... It is a campus university in a small city. If a student wants the bright lights of Manchester or Newcastle then Lancaster just does not do. It is, of course, horses for courses. And nothing wrong in that!

Dunlurking -- congratulations on having such a young looking DH! I think DD has signed up for an offer holder day in March; just have to figure out how to get her there.

Hells -- Lancaster seems to be rated higher in some tables; loser in others, and pretty much neck-and-neck in others, so we've given up on league tables.

Sounds like the one thing everyone can agree on is that Egham is deadly dull and the town of Lancaster is likely to have more charm and a bit more to do. That said, I went to uni in a cement town which had little more to offer than a supermarket, a transvestite bar and donut shop; we still had a blast.

I guess it really will come down to course content and whether being close to some of the most glorious spots in the world offsets being able to meet up with friends and family in London for dinner and tlc as needed. It looks to me like the travel time from Lancaster to London is more than 3 hours.

If the West Coast line is running properly it's only just over 2 hours to London Euston. It's speeded up a lot.
