Finding next year's accommodation

Feeling upset as DD called and said that they were not successful for yet another student house for next year. One was lovely but too small, one they were not picked out of the hat! , one the previous viewers rang and said they would take it while they were being shown around and the last one they took details and said they would email the guarenteurs but then emailed to say another group had paid a deposit.
They keep emailing as instructed or phoning if there is a number. Some of the agents don't take let properties off the website and then don't email back to the request to view. She is waiting for a landlord to text back re a viewing tomorrow after calling her with availability.
Only 3 weeks in to the process but they are struggling to all get together for viewing times what with work deadlines and lectures etc.
It is cutthroat and they are getting very despondent. Lets only went live 3 weeks ago. Last year it was mid Feb when they got somewhere but were only turned down twice.
They are 2nd year students and worried that they won't get any where as there was an influx of students last year.
Anyone else have DC with the same issues?

Well after seeing four properties today they have a house. One I found myself not through the agent.
Lovely house and lovely landlady and husband. The students snapped it up, her husband insisted they read the contract first, they were worried they would lose out again. They pipped another group to get it and I feel slightly guilty but its an everyman for himself situation.
Deposits sent, rooms agreed , contracts and guarantour papers to sign....phew.
The unis really need to be aware of the effect on existing students of expanding so fast.

That's great news. I hope they all appreciate your help.

Well done Star

Saw your name - hoped for the best - and you've done it! Big sigh of relief.

It does bring to the fore, though, as universities continue to expand, unless they monitor what student landlords are doing and whether the private housing stock is sufficient, students may well get this problem all the time from now on. Are there less houses available this year? Do they think more students will live at home in the future so do not think there is a housing shortage? It also flags up that students are not always looking for properties in the right places if you found the property and they didn't/couldn't.

It is always first come, first served, so no need to feel guilty about anyone else. No-one was feeling guilty about your students not getting anything.

To be fair to the students the house wasnt really on the right part of the website, was under rooms not houses to let. Probably meant by being tucked away it wasnt noticed. Luckily for us!

What's the typical weekly rents you're all looking at here? I've no idea what is reasonable or not any more. In the north. Thanks.

Jugglingballs65 · 09/02/2016 17:19

No idea for the North. DD is in the far West. This year is paying ( I'm paying) £435 a month for a big room in a shared house. Next year will be a smaller room at £390 a month.
Think this area is quite expensive.
Plus deposit of £450

My dd is in the north. Next year her rent will be £90 per week which I think includes bills & wifi

Jugglingballs65 · 09/02/2016 18:22

should have said, wifi and water included but has gas and electric on top of the rent.
