I think millymolly idea of ascribing weights to each element is good,so it can be seen in a table .
I did this - it was helpful as it really nailed down what was important to me... I was able to drop a couple of unis fairly easily.
For me: A large city university, by the sea, relatively cheap, not too far away (within couple of hours of home). With a good degree, that was exam based. I wanted lots of extras curricular stuff to do... So chose a uni that taught a broad range of subjects... So there was lotd of music /arts /sports going on.
I also wanted to speak with students on my chosen course... So I hung around the department (!) , randomly asking peope about the course, would they choose this uni again etc, did they enjoy it, did the dept seem to value students, rather than treat them as an necessary inconvenience!
.. That was an eye opener!
See if you can chat to the dept admin/secs - they often are a good indicator of how the dept functions, also a wealth of information and experience!
I wanted to try to see the uni away from all the slick marketing... It is soooo easy to fall into this.
I do think any experience of the university and the locale is important ... After all really want to make an informed decision...
It's a long time to be at a uni that you don't like in a place you loathe!
