Does anyone have details of a good student house insurance policy please? Ds is now in a shared flat and not in halls. Is insurance worth it? Seems like he has a lot of stuff. Tia.

Maybe check first to see if he is covered by your own house insurance?

When I was a student everything was covered in advertising for endsleigh student insurance and, while this was 'awhile' ago when I needed to claim I found them to be very good after regretting not buying any insurance thinking it was a waste of money they provide insurance when students are in halls as well.

I don't know if there are other organisations (very likely and, others will likely come along and mention them) but that was the one I was with and found them to be very good.

We always used Endsleigh. Everyone did. Even when we were renting after uni they were one of the few options for insurance in furnished houses.

My house insurance has £5000 cover for students away from home

I used them after graduating as well. I found them to be really reasonable at the time.

There were various people who assumed they were covered by their parents insurance and learnt the hard way that they were not - there was something about spending every holiday with your parents and that being your 'main residence'. In my first year there was a fire in the hall I was staying in (some idiot didn't put relightable candles in cold water for 24 hrs and they relit setting fire to the hall) and because i was in hall for nine months of the year my parents insurance refused to pay out as I wasn't spending enough time with them - I wasn't alone in that (I hadn't checked, my parents told me it would be fine - I should have known better given the relationship I had with them!!) BUT there were a lot of people in the same position aside from the smug bugger next door to me who had insurance!

In second year I got a policy with endsleigh, and when where I was staying got flooded (drunk housemate left tap on in bathroom when I and other housemate were away). I was fully covered and there was no problem.

Check your policy carefully and phone your insurer to find out the exact details.

My information is somewhat out of date now so the residency might not be an issue anymore, but please check and don't risk it. Hall/flat/house share all sorts can happen as it isn't only your behaviour you need to be aware of.

Ask your house insurers. Ours don't but endsleigh wasn't expensive and we added on some gadgets for extra cover for them.
