single vs double duvet?

I know, there are more important things to sort out in the run up to leaving home, but today's big dilemma is whether DD should get a single of double duvet for uni. Does anyone have any experience on the duvet front?? This year, DD will be in a residence with a single bed, but I reckon a double duvet will be more useful down the road and provide more cover if a "friend" sleeps over but will it be too big and end up constantly falling on the never-vacuumed floor?

Exactly. Trying to sleep two to a single bed is made bearable by a double duvet, and if it's cold and your love life is even colder, you can double it up for warmth.

Definitely double, warmer for one and two Grin

Definitely a double -I find they are less likely to end up on the floor and much more snugly for when freshers flu hits if they are feeling a bit homesick/ill

Some Halls can be very hot so she my not want a duvet doubled-up, unless it was fairly thin in the first place.
We got DD a double duvet with a plain white cover (so it was practical: could be washed-at-high-temperature or bleached) and got decoration and/or additional warmth with a quilted throw.

Get a double. We bought single last year and have to rebuy this year.

The duvet wasn't expensive to replace but the bedding linen was!

I bought 2 thin singles for DS1 when he was in Halls. One was fine for warmer weather and 2 could fit inside a normal duvet cover to make a heavier option for colder nights. This meant there was a spare duvet for visitors - often these were mates rather than his girlfriend, so sharing the single bed wasn't an option they fancied. He also took a roll-up camping mat from home and even in his very small room there was enough space on the floor to roll it out. It's one of those slightly inflatable ones so quite comfy but rolls up small enough to fit in the bottom of his wardrobe. It got borrowed quite a bit by other residents who had friends staying so I'd say worth considering taking one if you already have one.

He continued to use 2 single duvets when he moved out into a flat with the standard student double bed (I wish these had been standard issue when I was a student!).

Personally, I quite like using 2 single duvets when sharing a double/king sized bed as my late DH was a restless sleeper and used to toss and turn either pulling the double duvet off me completely in the middle of the night or managing to wrap it round himself so that again I was uncovered and had to wake him up to unravel it. Having 2 separate duvets saved me from severe sleep deprivation.

Double. Remember having to change my single for a double shortly after going to uni!

Another vote for a double

What tog? We have got 10 but MIL and DM say she should have 13.

Her halls can get chilly apparently. They are very new with en suite wet room and shared kitchen/sitting room. It seems that the heating just isn't on as much as one might like. A bit cheeky considering the extortionate rent!

boatashore · 01/09/2015 07:45

Looks like the clear winner is a double duvet. Thanks for all the info!

I've heard that DD's halls can be overly warm, so am going for the 10 tog (4 seems too light). She can always add a blanket. As for the rent costs, I agree that they are shocking. I just hope some of the money filters through to the education side, given how skint most unis are these days despite fees etc.

We are the same as Kez - DS has a single bed at home, had a single bed in halls so we purchased single bedding for uni; the house he is moving into this week has a double bed...

Kez100 · 01/09/2015 13:51

Tog depends on the student. My daughter loves the cold! Halls were too warm for her. She was happy with a 10 tog (and the window open - lucky she was on fourth floor!).
