There is usually a programme of events for them all to follow. It might have a tour of various places including halls. Have you checked the website for a schedule?

It is normally fairly well planned for just the reason you state

Full details on Strathclyde apparently from 1st sept.

Here is a link to the programme link

I'm taking dd1 in to Strathclyde on Tuesday. Don't think any of her particular friends are going so we will go together. She's picked out a few mini lectures she would like to hear so will do those herself. The open day programme has lots of really useful information in it.

What courses is your ds interested in?

politics/social sciences

will check out the link, thanks

We went to Glasgow open day last term, your chosen subjects do timed talks and there is a main area where every subject has a stand and you can talk to them about the course content, there are also regular tours of the accommodation, talks by the SU and also plenty of other talks. I think we were there about four hours max so plenty of time to look round Glasgow itself if you don't know it. There's an underground so it's very easy to get around.
You have to choose three subjects for the first two years, so my DS will apply for the subject he wants to study and then you choose two more there are lots to choose from although obviously time tabling could affect your choice. Some we talked to didn't like it as they couldn't think of two other subjects they wished to study at HE level
We also visited Edinburgh which before we went was my DC's first choice. But now it's Glasgow, we come from the south so knew nothing about Glasgow it's self, but we both loved it, it's a dynamic friendly exciting city, loads of culture, few tourists, the university had a great feel to it, and for DC's main subject it's ranked higher than Edinburgh, my DC also preferred the lectures and the course content. The only problem was whilst the sun shone in the south we looked ridiculously underdressed had to go out and buy thicker jumpers and umbrellas! Edinburgh (the city) by comparison looked tatty, and pretty boring from a teenagers perspective, the lecturer for his subject seemed less dynamic and the course for his chosen subject wasn't my DC felt as good, many we met in the city were deliberately bloody unhelpful exceedingly unfriendly, and it's a very popular destination with those (like my DC) from the independent sector so DC felt didn't have such a broad cross selection of students.

DS is off to the first Strathclyde open day tomorrow, and then to Glasgow on Wednesday. There are Heriott Watt and Edinburgh open days on the 25th and 26th Sept. You register on-line and download the brochure, and if there are any changes to the programme you'll receive an email to tell you (based on which subjects you ticked when you registered).

My son went to Strathclyde and Glasgow (amongst others) he went to the Strathy one alone after school they had a Friday afternoon/ evening one which maybe wasn't the best option as he didn't get to see round the engineering dept they only did that on the Saturday although he saw it later on on the applicants day.
He went to Ed uni with the school and Heriot Watt with a friend, he had to book engineering tours at HW and Ed, presume other subjects are similar.
He mainly tried chatting to current students and getting a feel for the uni and city.

2rebecca which engineering course is / was your son looking at?

2rebecca · 02/09/2015 12:58

M Eng in mechanical engineering. He's about to start second year. he went for MEng with a year abroad at Strathclyde in the end and is having a great time, he now regards Glasgow as his home.
