Changing subject at Uni - clearing or reapply next year?

DD has changed her mind about which subject she wants to do. She has a place for music but has recently decided that she would rather do History or English instead.

She has her IB results, which is 37 points and now has an unconditional firm offer from a very good university. She is considering possibly retaking one of her Standard Level subjects to get two extra points.

Can someone talk me through the relative merits of applying next year verses going through Clearing next week for a change of subject. Or should she just take up her place and do music?

Hi halvedfees, thanks for your thoughts and the extra info on Durham and the IB. I have reminded DD that a 7 in HL history means that she is clever and will do well at any arts subject, and that the 5 in music is because she didn't have a good teacher. She is still reflecting on what to do and we are looking a reading lists, etc.

This morning DH came up with the idea of History and Politics at Warwick Hmm, which may be available through adjustment. Is all I can think of is how central her Durham college would be (not Castle, but next door), and how many great activities would be on her doorstep. I agree with you that having everything laid on would be a good thing.

I think I'll just be relieved with whatever decision DD makes so that we can apply for funding and book flights.

Agree Hmm Random - we made an 'emergency' dash to Warwick as soon as the IB results came out. It was DS's insurance offer, but he wasn't convinced he wanted to spend 3 years there, despite the very good course on offer. Perhaps it's just a bit of a 'Marmite' place, and your DD might love it, but has she visited?? - (I know it's obviously very subjective, but we couldn't leave fast enough; DS was adamant that he would prefer to start all over again and apply next year rather than go there).

So relieved that Durham accepted him even though his HL maths was a 5 - (should have stuck to SL). Like your DD, he has 7 in HL history, so would certainly have reapplied if Durham hadn't taken him....

Agree Hmm - don't know why that didn't work first time!

Random. Has your DD made a decision. I thought the window for securing a place through adjustment was only five days after registering for it. So if she registered for it on the 13th the five days are up, I think?

No decision yet. Adjustment seems to have come and gone without DD actually registering, which I find odd. So now, she would have to enter clearing, which means asking Durham to release her and then adding a clearing choice.

On the other hand, she was very excited yesterday when she received information from her college about accommodation and activities, so they obviously think she is coming.
