Where are the best unis to row (not Oxbridge)

My DD2 (just finishing y10) takes her rowing v seriously and is determined to continue at university. Where are the best rowing unis in the uk? At the moment she wants to study vetinerary sciences or zoology, although in reality I think it's quite early days for degree subject choice. I'm just interested in a general steer as to where rowing is properly supported.

I would second caution about rowing at Uni and a challenging course. I was at Cambridge and at a very insignificant college in the rowing scheme of things and only the second boat. Even then it was very early starts for most of the time and straight to lectures (I did a very lecture heavy course, at least 2 every day with 3 or 4 tutorials a week), coupled with an extremely hearty social life (ahem). She needs to be realistic about what it will entail - there is a reason that most Blues rowers are doing made up degrees less time consuming courses. Of course it's doable but with Vet Med in particular where burn out / drop out is very high it does need to be a factor for consideration

Thanks - yes, one of the reasons I said in my OP that it was early days for degree choices was that it was a nice way of saying that I have my own private doubts as to whether she is a candidate for vetmed, but I'm not going to squish her dreams - especially as she is still only 15, and we are starting to talk about zoology as another equally exciting "just in case" option! The rowing, though, is definitely not going to go away.

Might also be worth looking at Cardiff - not necessarily for the uni rowing (although I rowed for them and think they're fab Grin ) but for Rebecca who train out of the same boathouse.

DH rowed at UCL. It was the reason he went there, and he's still rowing 30 odd years later.

I echo what someone said about being aware that she might need to choose her studies or rowing - a family member is an engineering don at Cambridge and she says they inwardly groan when a student gets into rowing.

When I was rowing at uni the top contenders outwith Oxbridge were Durham, Bristol, OB, UCL. Just to chuck some Scottish ones in there, Edinburgh and Glasgow were also pretty strong. Rowing was the best part of my uni years! Have never had a figure like that since.... ConfusedConfused

I work near Cardiff and we've just had a Cardiff University student with us a month who is in th GB rowing squad. He's part of some elite sports squad at the University and was training effort and after his day with us most days.
I have no idea about course availability though I'm afraid.

DH failed first year of his engineering degree at Bristol, mainly due to rowing Grin

Luckily they wanted him enough to let him re-sit, and he calmed down a little on the rowing front and eventually came out with a 2:1...

Glasgow and Edinburgh also have vet schools but my sister did vet medicine and there was no way she could have done her course load and trained 6 days a week for rowing

RVC does have a rowing club as it is near that little stream the Thames. Rowing tends to take second place at vet school many, many vet students I was with rowed. But there were no rowers who were vet students. I do now employ a vet who was a rower however, he took his rowing seriously a did zoology at UCL and then a masters at Kings and the RVC whilst still rowing. Then went to Murdoch to become a vet.
