Daughter exempt for council tax but flat mate isn't?

DD about to move in to flat, sharing with one other. Her housemate has just graduated and now works full-time (DD just about to finish year 1 as an undergraduate).

She has had confirmation that she will be exempt from council tax and her flat mate gets a reduction but he still think she should chip in and contribute a bit towards his bill.

We don't think that this is fair but is right?

This is all a bit new to us!

I'm a student, and live with my dh - when I sent in my exemption, my name was removed from the bill, so legally it's only his responsibility.

I can see why your dd 's flatmate feels miffed though Sad Awkward situation.

My DS works full time, finished uni last year and shares with students as it's cheaper. He pays his council tax and gets a 25% discount as it is his responsibility not theirs

If he knew she was a student when she moved in, then I don't get his problem. Surely if he's a recent graduate he'll know full well that she's exempt Confused

The flatmate is being silly. Sounds like he didn't think it through before agreeing to a student moving in and is now trying to make up for not having done his homework by pinning the cost on her.

His lack of foresight is not her problem.

If he feels aggrieved, the people to take it up with are the local authority.

If your dd lived there alone there'd be no council tax to pay. It's his living there that causes there to be a bill.

I saw an article like this on Martin Lewis website recently and it stated that the student wasn't responsible for council tax, nor would the council ever chase them for it. However the other tenant(s) is responsible for the council tax. Seems unfair and they suggested for goodwill to offer something.

Flat mate said nothing about it until deposit paid and tenancy agreement signed.

What is in the agreement?
