Hi do any of you have DC at Hull University ? Specifically looking for advice about the Creative Music Technology degree and about accomodation - DS going to Open Day in June and looking for some feel of what the quality of accomodation is like - seems ok price wise. Any halls to avoid ? Anyone know anything about the music technology course ??

Um. It's in Scarborough not Hull. It was crossed off DS's list because of this.

MimsyBorogroves · 21/04/2015 14:40

A lot of Hull Uni's Scarborough courses are moving/have moved back to Hull - worth checking for clarity.

I did an MA at Hull (not in music) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

horsemadmom · 21/04/2015 15:29

All the info DS found on the course (including the dept. videos) said Scarborough. He was looking at BBC grade insurance choices. What does your DS want from the course and what are his subjects? Nearly done with this palaver and may be able to help.

Lilymaid · 21/04/2015 15:39

DS2 was at Hull for his first degree. He enjoyed his time there - small university, lively students union, good library and very good friends!
If he is at Hull rather than Scarborough the main halls are the Lawns which are a way from the university but served by a regular bus (think it may now be free).

traceyinrosso70 · 21/04/2015 16:03

Just rung admissions and the course used to be at Scarborough but is now at the Hull Campus. My DS is doing BTec Level 3 extended diploma in music technology at the moment and is predicted 3 Distinctions so should be ok on the admissions side but wants a traditional Uni experience on a course which isn't run at many of the older established Unis. We have got open days at Hull, DeMontfort, UCLAN, Leeds Beckett and Huddersfield lined up. He is particularly keen to do some live sound not just recording studio based

Ah. We looked at Sussex, York, Surrey,Edinburgh, Leeds and Liverpool. All required Music A level plus physics/maths. I don't think they take BTech but may be wrong. Surrey, Edinburgh, York and Leeds really wanted an A in maths and music plus a preference for physics as they have a heavy engineering focus. All wanted a minimum of AAB.
Have a look at Keele. Lots of flexible subject combinations and well established music tech. Sadly, Oxford Brookes has pulled their course this year-it looked really nice.

SecretSquirrels · 21/04/2015 16:54

I know a friend of DS1 who is at Hull. She is not doing music but is in halls. Apparently they are really good. She is catered and en-suite and her room is 3 times the size of DS's cell room at another uni.
I believe they guarantee accommodation to all as well. The halls she is in (The Lawns) are on the outskirts of Hull in like a mini student village. If he has a car there is ample free parking at the halls. Good local buses as well.

MimsyBorogroves · 21/04/2015 17:59

The village The Lawns is based in - Cottingham - is lovely. Nice and peaceful (though the halls are next door to the secondary school, but they're set well apart) and safe, and only a short journey to uni of hull town centre.

traceyinrosso70 · 21/04/2015 19:39

horsemadmum hence our different choice of Unis to you as no Maths/Physics A level but as my DS hated school and would have left given the chance (despite a good set of GCSEs) I am grateful that he is still in a position to be looking at higher education .

I went to Hull (2006-2009, so things might have changed a little since then!).

I didn't live at The Lawns; I was at Needler Hall, which is catered and is more towards the centre of Cottingham. It was fine (I've seen worse student accommodation, but I've certainly seen better!). I was in the older of the two buildings, which is definitely better as the rooms are slightly bigger.

Cottingham is a nice little village to be based in, and I really enjoyed living in Hull itself. For all it's a city, it is quite small and has quite a community feel to it.

I really liked the campus too; it's a mixture of older buildings and (admittedly awful) more modern concrete monstrosities. I think when I left they were in the process of building and opening some newer facilities. The newer buildings they had when I was there were really good.

avocadotoast · 21/04/2015 19:59

Oh, and having grown up and lived in Leeds, I'd say students in Hull seem nicer and more down to earth than those in Leeds (much less splashing daddy's credit card/gap yah yahoos). But that's just my personal opinion Wink

MaelstromOfLunacy · 21/04/2015 20:00

Avocado I was at hull 2006-2009! You weren't a drama student were you?

Fab Uni OP, he'll have an amazing time Smile

shinysparklythings · 21/04/2015 20:04

I was an undergrad from 2003-2007 then postgrad till 2011. I still live here and I love it, it's very cheap too The uni was voted most friendly for several years running.

The main halls are called the lawns and based in Cottingham which is a village next to hull. I never lived in halls I went straight into housing. The university was great whilst I was there and, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

avocadotoast · 21/04/2015 20:04

Ooh small world! Nope, not drama

Georgina1975 · 21/04/2015 20:11

I live in the area and there had been A LOT of money invested in the campus infrastructure in recent years - esp. the library.

My impression is that it is a very student friendly city with plenty of decent living options post-halls. City of Culture in 2017 too (might be particulalry relevant to the Music Department?).

Lilymaid · 21/04/2015 20:24

It is a very underrated university - especially on MN where only about 10 universities seem to be discussed. DS2 really developed academically whilst there and had great friends who were wonderful to him when he was diagnosed with a serious illness.
He's now doing well on a masters course at an RG university with an international reputation in his subject, so his Hull degree really worked well for him.

horsemadmom · 21/04/2015 21:04

Great to hear all this positive stuff about Hull. Sounds lovely.
Tracey-
Well done to your DS for pursuing his passion. It sounds like he'll enjoy Hull (or anywhere else he choses) because he made the decision to work hard when it would have been very tempting to stay off the 'conveyer belt'.
Do I remember correctly that there is a big music festival in Hull? Read prospectuses/websites a year ago and they all blur together. So important to grab opportunities to work with musicians and techies during the degree.
Good luck!

MatchsticksForMyEyes · 21/04/2015 21:08

I did French/Music at Hull '99-'03. Loved being in halls. The music department was great. I have close friends I made whilst studying there.

LifeOfBriony · 21/04/2015 21:13

DD was at Hull and was very happy there. Very pleased with pastoral care - she had 2 bereavements while there and they were very supportive. Agree with positive comments on The Lawns and Cottingham. In her 2nd and 3rd years she was in shared houses in streets off Newlands Avenue which is a nice local high street with all the shops you need - proper greengrocers and butchers, Sainsbury's local, charity shops, cafes. Hull city has all the usual chain stores. Also worth saying that the accommodation was cheaper than other Unis we looked at at the time.

TheEmpressofBlandings · 21/04/2015 21:18

I'm by far the oldest alumnus then! I was there 92-95 and loved every minute.
I never lived in halls either, the student houses were far better IMO. The uni owns lots of the houses in neighbouring streets and rents them to students, my first year I was in a house of 9 girls. Incredibly cheap accommodation and walking distance to campus.
Can't help with the course, but Hull is a great place to study!

traceyinrosso70 · 21/04/2015 23:28

Am warming to Hull - as is DS (more importantly !!!) because of it's friendly reputation just hope the course is "right" - open day 27th June so we will see !!

eatyourveg · 22/04/2015 15:25

ds and I are going to the Hull June open day too (not for music though) We're going on the 13th though, Confused are there two? His former teacher is an alumnus (96-99) and recommended The Lawns as "the place to be"

traceyinrosso70 · 22/04/2015 16:23

eatyourveg don't panic there are 2 open days in June !!

I'm from hull and went to uni there 2010-2013. They've just spent a shed load on the library and it's pretty good, they have on campus 24 hour computer access, extended library opening over exam period.
I had issues whilst at uni (my marriage ended) and the pastoral care was excellent.
I lived off Newland Ave for 8 years, bought a house there, it's where a lot of 2nd/3rd years rent. It's a mix of family and students. It's got a really good cafe bar culture, but not too raucous :)
Hull is friendly as anything IF you are friendly to start with, us Hull lot take not shit Grin
