Exeter uni post-offer open day

DD and I are attending a post-offer day at Exeter uni on March 21. We are flying down (cheaper than training it and spending night at hotel) so will need to get from airport to campus and back. In the morning, we'll have time to get a bus in, but in the afternoon, I think we'll have to get a taxi, or it will be a bit tight to get the flight. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced taxi firm in Exeter, or is there anyone else going who would like to share a taxi....?

If its a matter of half an hour or so to let you get the bus I would just explain that you have to leave early. People do that all the time in our post UCAS visits and it is fine. Email them ahead of time to let them know that you may need to do this and they will tell you if it would be a problem.

How early would you have to leave? We found that we had had enough well before the end of most of these post offer days..............

chemenger · 23/01/2015 17:19

But you have never been to one of our Post-offer visits; they are gripping right up to the end.. Actually no, leave when you need to. I've had people leave immediately after my introductory talk (they have been on the accommodation tour and other general stuff before that and had lunch), it isn't a problem.

Hakluyt · 23/01/2015 18:00

We have, actually! You were obviously gripping.........Grin

Hakluyt · 23/01/2015 18:03

Assuming you're Exeter obviously. Dd spent the whole time searching for Professor Francesca....

chemenger · 23/01/2015 18:43

Not Exeter, but I think most places follow a similar pattern.

chemenger · 23/01/2015 18:46

I should say your had me worried there, I always carefully insert a mumsnet phrase or saying into my talks to flush people out. those of you visiting chemical engineering department should listen carefully!

Capital taxis or heart... 01392 666 666. Airport is about 30 minute drive to the uni or 2 buses but it's exeter... Devon.. Transport is not great lol. I am born and bred from Exeter I left 5 years ago at 20 haven't looked back since. I think the Uni is good though very international crowd a lot of students from China and Japan. X

They aren't called that any more. It's Apple taxis now (same number). And you got your radio stations mixed up! Grin Gemini, not heart! But like I said - Apple now. There might be a dedicated coach from the airport though - they meet and greet at the train station so the same might happen at the airport. I'd allow more than 30 mins to get back to the airport, to be honest. Especially if going by bus. There may be timetables but they are honoured more in the breach than the observance.

Lulu3108 · 26/01/2015 11:40

Didn't get radio stations mixed up Grin there are a taxi firm called heart taxis/exe taxis 01392 555555. And there is Gemini/capital who have merged and called apple which are probably the biggest. All my life ive called them Gemini so I expect I'll still call them that in habit..

If you read my comment properly I didn't say it would take 30 mins by bus from the airport to the uni. I said it would take much longer than that because it's 2 buses more like an hour because the buses going to the uni aren't very good.. It's exeter.. Not London heathrow lol I said a 30 minute taxi ride.

Megabus coaches and national express coaches drop off in sowton only and then the bus station, because Exeter is such a small city and has such a small airport they don't pick up from there.

I wouldn't know about meet and greet because I am not a tourist or a university student I am a person from there and I regulary visit my home town where all my friends and family live.

Taxis are metered I don't think they would do a bad price between the airport and uni. Avoid the taxi ranks they charge more.

Exeter is a fairly nice and safe small city it is an ideal place for someone's child to go university. It is safer than the likes of Plymouth.

GentlyBenevolent · 26/01/2015 13:33

And I disagree that 30 mins is long enough for a taxi ride. I live right next to the university, in the afternoons it can take longer. :) I've never heard of heart, you gave the Gemini phone number which is why I thought you meant them. The number of the beast. TWICE. And yet they are a decent taxi firm and not even slightly devilish! Grin

I'm not a tourist or a student either, I live here now (not in the past) and have done so for 20 years, but I do use the train station hence I know about the meet and greet. :)

I haven't any advice for you, except that any uni which wouldn't be understanding about you needing to leave early isn't worth bothering with!
But that's not what I wanted to say - I'm a Northerner now living in Devon. My son has just started at Exeter uni and he loves it. Exeter is a really nice city and relatively safe. So I'd definitely recommend it.
Good luck.
