Do all universities have exams in January, or just some?

Does it depend whether they have two or three semesters?

Many thanks.

We have two semesters and no January exams at my university. There are quite a few systems around.

MrsMyrtleMarple · 13/01/2015 21:42

My son is in his final year at uni. Out of his house of four people, two have January exams, two don't. It depends on the course.

TheOriginalSteamingNit · 13/01/2015 21:43

Depends on subject!

MuttonCadet · 13/01/2015 21:43

I've never heard of Jan exams at Uni, is this a new thing?

Kez100 · 13/01/2015 21:51

In my DDs flat of six: two do, two are coursework only creative degrees and two don't. Bit of everything!

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 13/01/2015 21:53

Most courses at my uni have January exams.

I picked a course with no exams at all Grin

EightToSixer · 13/01/2015 21:54

I am a lecturer at 3 universities. They are all on 2 semesters but the dates vary. One has December exams and essays due on 5th Jan with the new term starting on 5th Jan, all teaching in semester 2 finished by March 30th. The other two have exam and essay period most of January, start teaching semester 2, the last week of Jan and continue teaching for a couple of weeks after the Easter break.

Lilymaid · 13/01/2015 21:55

DS2 has had January exams at both universities he has studied at (end of semester/individual course).
Back in the 1970s I had Mid Sessional exams at university. Worst year was when first exam was on Jan 2nd!

Greenandcabbagelooking · 13/01/2015 21:56

None at my two semester uni, on any course.

chocoshopoholic · 13/01/2015 22:03

I've attended/worked at 5 uni's all of which had exams Jan & May/June for the courses I was involved in.

cricketballs · 13/01/2015 22:19

DS had exam today (his course is majority coursework/essays)

Clobbered · 13/01/2015 22:21

Very variable it seems. DD at Bristol has 2 semesters, exams in January and June

fussychica · 14/01/2015 08:38

DS at 2 semester uni. Teaching start again later this month. He had exams on Saturday and another today with finals from mid May.

LeapingOverTheWall · 14/01/2015 08:42

DD1 has her first exam of this semester today, next semester's will be in May. She reckons more do one set of exams a year than do two, judging by the fact that a lot of the graduate recruitment is happening at the moment, when she's in the middle of revision and exams Sad.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 14/01/2015 08:42

I went to Surrey and we had them in December rather than January. Was great as it meant we could enjoy Christmas without revising. Some courses didn't have Dec/Jan ones at all.

GraceFox · 14/01/2015 11:54

Ds doing an Arts subject at oxford has exams starting tomorrow. He's in first year and they don't 'count' but still important.

ScrummyPup · 14/01/2015 14:21

Thanks all Smile

DS had an exam last week for which he spent all Christmas working. It does count, though only a small percentage.

UptheChimney · 14/01/2015 19:15

Another one saying that it depends on the university, and the course. I've taught courses where we have them, and at other places where we don't.

Why do you ask?

eatyourveg · 14/01/2015 19:48

ds has 2 semesters - no exams until the summer

skylark2 · 15/01/2015 13:19

DD had exams in December. None in January.

2rebecca · 15/01/2015 16:53

It varies. All at my son's uni have Jan exams. My niece's uni had their exams in December.

JellicleCat · 15/01/2015 17:04

DD had hers in December, but it depends on the course as some at that uni have them in January instead. More exams in the summer.

Isthiscorrect · 17/01/2015 18:21

Dos has three terms, and no exams till May/ June. However he did have four essays to hand in for yesterday which he worked on daily through the Christmas holiday. They do count towards this years final grade but only a small part of the total degree 1/9. His friends at the same uni are a mixture of exams and no exams, likewise those friends in halls from other unis are also a mixture of exams and no exams. Exams appear to be in the majority.
