Oxbridge 2015 #2

Continuing Roisin's thread.

I've even succumbed to TSR, having sworn I wouldn't. Still no news here and haven't heard of news from any other source in the same subject at the same college but being very uncool tbh as the reality is that rejection after an interview would be much kinder for DS than a no ab initio. Massively cheered by a late afternoon offer from Bristol though. I thought I was chilled, I'm clearly not Grin.

Fingers crossed for everyone still waiting and hoping. It's very hard to see them disappointed, is the problem :(

We're done with the interviews now Atia it's just general ramblings and how I am not allowed to touch any letters that come.

duchesse · 02/01/2015 23:24

Can I join please? DD2 went for interview for Classics at Cambridge in early December and we're at the nail-biting waiting to hear phase. Can't mention anything out loud at home and getting a little antsy...

AtiaoftheJulii · 03/01/2015 00:55

welcomes duchesse to the fold

My dd1 applied for Classics too, but at Oxford, so not rivals! Not long now ... we are all holding hands so as to avoid the nail biting Smile

Littleham · 03/01/2015 16:26

Glad the result comes out next week (though pretty sure we already know the answer!)

Very proud of dd2 for trying. I view the result next week as a success, whether it is a yes or a no. I'm more worried about negotiating the A2's with minimum fallout.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that your children get the decision they want. (Hi duchesse - not long to wait now.... hope it goes well)

Raidne · 03/01/2015 17:49

Welcome on board, duchesse! Smile

I agree, Littleham, all the dc have succeeded whether the outcome is a yes or a no. To even be considered as Oxbridge material is pretty impressive. All of the dc who were interviewed (and, I'm sure, many who were not) are good enough to go there - this last bit is as much a lottery as anything else.

I hope any who get a "no" (amongst which group I expect ds to be!) are not disheartened but go on boldly to the fabulous things they are capable of achieving.

Good luck to all the dc waiting to hear.

MadameJosephine · 04/01/2015 13:14

Totally agree littleham and raidne I'm so proud of DS for getting this far, an offer would be the icing on the cake but DS is pretty much convinced its going to be a no :(

He is ok about it, though, and looking forward to his interview at Imperial later this month and a post offer day at UCL so plenty to keep him busy.

Best of luck everybody xxx

Molio · 04/01/2015 15:27

Agree too, completely. DS hasn't mentioned anything about Oxford at all since the interviews (though he told me what he'd been asked/ said, as far as he could remember). He's definitely not expecting an offer either. Anyhow, all the very best to everyone waiting and I hope everything turns out well, whatever happens this week. I've just asked DS casually if he'd like me to let him know at school what the outcome is and he said he was fine either way: I can open the letter and let him know or not let him know, or I can leave it for him to open when he gets in in the late afternoon. So pretty wide open really :) I don't think I'd like to e-mail a no. What's anyone else going to do?

AtiaoftheJulii · 04/01/2015 15:49

We'll all be out, and dd1 should be the first one home anyway.

webwiz · 04/01/2015 15:59

I must leave any Cambridge type post on the mat untouched so DS can get it whenever he happens to wander past. If I am in and DS isn't I must not contact him to let him know a letter has arrived and if he is in bed when the post arrives I must not wake him. So pretty specific instructions then Hmm

Raidne · 04/01/2015 17:03

As solicitors say, I am without instructions in this matter. Smile

No idea if ds will get a letter or an email - if it is the latter then he will see it first anyway. If it is the former then dh will probably see it first but he would not open it unless "authorised" to do so. Fun times.

Raidne · 04/01/2015 17:08

Ah, actually just looked this up on the college website and it says "Letters informing candidates of the outcome of their application will be sent out on Wednesday 7 January 2015."

I assume that means it will be sent by email as the main Oxford website says "Shortlisted candidates will be told whether or not their application has been successful on Wednesday 7 January 2015. Colleges will send either a letter or an email to arrive on this date."

So ds will know first which is good.

Figmentofmyimagination · 04/01/2015 17:12

I shall be doing nothing (except grimly attempting to control my own desire to know one way or another). If it is anything like gcses and AS exams, any letter/email will remain untouched and unopened for hours and hours while we all wait around on tenterhooks pretending it is a normal day. Fortunately I will be at work until 7pm and so will have lots of time in which to prepare my "never mind" face.

Molio · 04/01/2015 17:41

Unfortunately I have to be at home all day on Wednesday, or at least until someone comes to fix something. It's an 'all day' appointment but if I'm in luck the postman will come after the engineer, giving me time to scarper.

OP posts:
Raidne · 04/01/2015 18:27

As ds's email inviting him to interview ended up in his spam folder, no doubt the same thing will happen to the results email so who knows when he might open it. Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 05/01/2015 00:17

Copied Raidne and looked - "letters will be posted first class on 6th". So I guess I'll get a text if it's good news, or get home to a poker face if it's not!

Puffinstuff · 05/01/2015 10:14

We had a VERY brief chat yesterday about hearing from Cambridge. I indicated that I thought she was due to hear next week and she replied she wasn't sure when she would hear. All lies, I have been glued to TSR for a fotrnight and am very aware as to when email/letters will come and she is a super organised soul so will have marked it in her diary weeks ago ! So glad when we can forget about it all.

MrsBartlet · 05/01/2015 10:23

I will also will be glad when this week is done and we can move on. Dd is expecting a a rejection but as she says, until you know for definite you can't help hoping.

She has some friends in the year above who were rejected by Oxford last year and were very upset but are now thriving at other universities. We talked about that this weekend, so that she can see that if it is a rejection then people move on and can be happy elsewhere.

RandomFriend · 05/01/2015 10:43

At our house we have also been talking about how great some other universities are and how most people are very happy at whichever university they get to.

cathyandclaire · 05/01/2015 12:03

Happy New Year all! Only a few jokey mentions of Cambridge here, DD does;t think she'll get in but I suppose where there's life there's hope! She seems pretty chirpy at the moment but has a potentially horrific month of rejections ahead (Cambridge and she is auditioning for drama schools) so my job is to stop her falling in to a pit of despair.
I think her college e-mail...so no temptation to sneak a peak thank goodness!
Good luck to all DC

sassymuffin · 05/01/2015 15:04

DD started stressing out yesterday when the winter pool opened. Her biggest fear is because she qualifies for auto pooling that if she gets a thanks but no thanks it is not only from her chosen college but all colleges.

MadameJosephine · 05/01/2015 17:49

What happens if you are pooled but then need to be re-interviewed? The Cambridge website states interviews should be 10-13 Jan so surely those being invited back should hear before the weekend?

Littleham · 05/01/2015 18:10

You poor things! At least it is all over for us. Just the thought of another set of interviews makes me shudder.

Apparently my dd (according to her) will need a big treat next weekend whatever the outcome .... just in case she feels devastated! Hmm I know when someone is pulling a fast one....

webwiz · 05/01/2015 18:10

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=52635609 explains how pooling works and when you hear if you are going to be interviewed.

MadameJosephine · 05/01/2015 18:24

Thanks for that webwiz could find that info anywhere. I hope DS doesn't have to go through the whole interview thing again!

webwiz · 05/01/2015 18:29

I think the pooling process is quite confusing especially as it has changed for this year. I presume last year letters went out and it was yes,no or maybe. Delaying things means there are less maybes.
