So far we have.....

Bedding
Towels (& tea towels)
Bedside light
bin
Torch
some small cooking bits(the kitchen is equipped)
Bucket with a lid for soaking pink tights
Song books (I haven't bought the monologue books yet)
Notebooks
Uniform
Vanish & handwash liquid
Nail brush
Lots of food (Her BF brought a crate of fun food - small boxes of cereal, noodles, chocolate, nice tea bags etc oh & 6 tins of custard she bought about 9 months ago)
Dustpan & brush
Extension lead, chargers & surge protector

I feel I'm missing loads of stuff - but I'm not too worried about clothes, toiletries. make-up or electricals

Everything! Still, the house will be tidy once she goes!

I have no idea what her list is but we live in the middle of nowhere and her Uni is in the middle of a city centre, so she can buy it if she needs it easier there than here. I think it's going OK though as she has boxes and boxes and they are very heavy! Last week she even started to take stuff out. LOL

TheWoollybacksWife · 30/08/2014 21:47

I would add:

Coat hangers
Umbrella/Scarf/Gloves
Bath Mat
Hole punch and stapler
Small sewing kit
Hot water bottle

First aid kit with cold remedies, plasters, ibuprofen, strepsils, vapour rub etc

Book of stamps and some envelopes
Sheet of passport photos

GnomeDePlume · 31/08/2014 00:56

I have made a 'rainy day' box for DD. It is packed full of things to do for no money:

  • playing cards
  • cookie mixes which just require water
  • modelling balloons
  • jelly mixes
  • glitter
  • weird coloured nail varnish

and lots more. She doesnt know about this yet.

sashh · 31/08/2014 09:09

flip flops if s/he doesn't have their own shower.

Drawing pins - there's usually a notice board and it is usually big and blank.

Lindor · 31/08/2014 09:12

nice ideas. We haven't even got that far yet. Though Ds has brought loads of cardboard boxes home from work for packing. He must be planning to take half the house, unless he's going to sell them to his friends!

KatyMac · 31/08/2014 09:18

Love your list GnomeDePlume but I'm not sure DD would know what to do with them (apart from the cookie mix!!) - I'm trying to think of 'dancing' alternatives.....pointe shoes to sew, a new score, a DVD musical she hasn't watched & the ubiquitous loom bands!!

She needs a white board, Sashe, the landlady suggested it & some new magnets to attach stuff to it no drawing pins allowed & some non marking white tak (not blue tak - I hope non marking exists)

I have added: Coat hangers, Bath Mat, Hot water bottle
Already there but forgotten was First aid kit

Still to organise: Book of stamps and some envelopes & Sheet of passport photos

Still to be decided on: Umbrella/Scarf/Gloves (as I hope she is coming home weekly) & Hole punch and stapler along with laptop & printer which I'm not sure about

Take the gloves and scarf, she will wake up one day and it will be cold, probably a Tuesday so she will not want to wait for the weekend..

I made my niece a 'bag on necessity' based on the H room of necessity it had everything I could think of that you might need from toilet roll to scarf and flip flops to emergency chocolate.

Lots of cheap things like sellotape and cheap toothbrushes in a pack. I bought things over a year so it didn't seem to cost much, which is a bit late to say now, but included £10 vouchers for supermarkets and even a spare mobile that cost £12.

I think the only thing I left out was condoms, but knew she would be opening it in front of her parents so didn't include them.

seagull70 · 31/08/2014 10:23

Good lists!

Also sending them off with a door jam, posh hot chocolate (for snuggling up in bed), extension leads.

Did a big IKEA shop yesterday for 2 of ours and it was full of uni students Grin

No 3 going to Belfast so we'll get hers out there as I doubt we have enough luggage allowance.

It's getting exciting isn't it? GrinGrin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2014 10:27

Yes to coathangers, and yes to scarf and gloves and hot water bottle.

DD1 took a teapot and a big cake to share with her new flatmates.

pinkrose123 · 31/08/2014 21:26

Small tool kit, airer or radiator airers, over door hooks, pop up laundry bin? I've bought lots of kitchen stuff too, not too sure whether it will be needed, but if not we'll bring it home and store it in the loft.

KatyMac · 31/08/2014 21:33

Bought over the door hooks & forgot to pack them!

Pop up laundry bag is packed

Duvet cover has been made......

Have people actually started packing? I am going (as a mature student) and am still at the point of making lists of things I need to buy... The only things in the 'ready to go' pile are 2 duvet sets, hand and bath towels, a pillow, a couple of folders, and a couple of notebooks. I feel like I should be packing and getting things ready but I just don't know where to start!

KatyMac · 05/09/2014 18:46

We have been packing since Easter

First thing bought was the 6 tins of custard, then a few weeks later, a tin opener!

This weekend it is clothes;I am pushing the idea of a capsule wardrobe so she only takes things that match......however I realise she will spend most of her time in leotards

She thinks she needs anew red oneHmm

Yesterday I was wondering whether DS1 has chosen the wrong course to study. At Meadowhall he was showing an uncharacteristic interest in which duvet covers to buy and was musing at length about the best colour shower mat to purchase - would it match the tiles and handtowels Shock Shock Should he have applied for an interior design course?

Thankfully sanity restored today when he declined to join today's follow up outing and showed little, if any interest, in items purchased. Those Monster's University balloons are likely to come therefore as a bit of a shock on arrival day.Grin

2rebecca · 06/09/2014 23:02

Bedding, pans, wok, glasses, sharp knives, cookery books, bike, clothes, computer and gaming paraphernalia, hockey sticks and other sports stuff, ear plugs

thereturnofshoesy · 06/09/2014 23:07

hello
can I kind of butt in to your thread please with a question.
my dd is 19 and of to college one monday(sn 19plus termtime boarder for first time ever)
do you worry that yours will be the one who turns up with the most stuff?

BackforGood · 06/09/2014 23:14

I asked my 2 nieces who are already at Universities, and both said

door stoppers
plastic cups for pre-drinks / parties

Apparently these are the two most important things you need.

The next is the Freshers' wristband Grin

seagull70 · 07/09/2014 07:48

Boys3 Grin

I have 3 leaving for uni this year and DH and I decided to take them up to sainsburys.

We wanted to show where to find all the cheapest stuff/ look for bargains etc.

Anyway, they were all pretty unimpressed until we got to the aisle where the fabric softener was.

They were in raptures over all the different designer scents and descriptions.

It may end up being the only reason they'll ever do washing Smile

KatyMac · 07/09/2014 08:47

No, thereturnofshoesy, I'm not worried or concerned about that at all.....I know for a fact she will have the most stuff of the whole college Wink

OP posts:
thereturnofshoesy · 07/09/2014 09:44

thanks, it is a worry isn't it

Notsoskinnyminny · 07/09/2014 11:15

I've just ventured into the spare room and it looks like everything but the kitchen sink is going back with her my poor little car is going to struggle Grin I think I'll leave the food shop until we've unloaded all her crap essentials.

KatyMac · 07/09/2014 12:09

TBH I'm far more worried about a 1000 other thing than how much crap stuff she takes; I am so far outside my comfort zone it's silly!!

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/09/2014 12:09

I wish I had a spare room!!

OP posts:
Notsoskinnyminny · 07/09/2014 12:20

KatyMac and thereturnofshoesy I've just found this on my phone Grin Bearing in mind she'd been bringing stuff home on the train from Easter next week's going to be a challenge fun!

Note the careful packing after lots of moaning to make sure the shoe boxes didn't get damaged. I'll get my revenge when she goes on her year abroad and is restricted to 2 suitcases Wink
