Student finance. How much are you subbing your child?

Big debates in this house. How much does a student "need" each week to live on? Ds is in University self-catering halls, and the minimum maintenance grant we're he's eligible for covers those fees, bar a couple of hundred for the year. Outside London, so no inflated prices there, but how much is reasonable to expect him to live on? If he's able to get a job locally, should that be for added extras, or for basic living expenses?

How's it working for others?

How much they can work very much depends on the course. DD1 will be doing biochem so lab time, lectures and tutorials makes for a lot of timetabled hours plus private study.

DD will be getting £50/week from us to cover food/entertainment/books/local travel.

My view is that I help them to the point where they are earning full time then they have to make their own way. We wont be giving them house deposits unless the national lottery comes good.

IMO you find the way that works for you and your DCs. MoreThanPotatoPrints way wouldnt have worked for us but then I guess our way doesnt work for her. Each to their own.

Swallows hard and tightens belt....
Got one uni starter - maintenance loan less than hall fees but al least is fully catered and one going to do MA starting this sept- tuition paid but maintenance falls to us mostly. She will try to get a job but fitting many hours in will be hard. Her study has to be her priority..

Re the taking out loans etc totally agree- they take the loans rather than spending your/their savings.
