INCOME SUPPORT HELP STUDENT LONE PARENT

xdellx · 17/01/2014 00:33

I am currently doing an access course, my son has just turned 4. I currently work 12 hours and am going to apply for income support (not sure if I will be entitled to anything)

However I am looking to leave work as I am starting to volunteer in a school and wont have the time to work as well. Will I still be entitled to income support if I voluntarily leave my job? Is anybody a student and can give me a rough idea of what I would be living on not working, lone parent and a student.

Thanks x

The rules are complex and, I think, age is also a factor.

Your best bet is contact your student support centre, you will be able to give you expert advice .

I thought f/t students were not allowed IS as they are not seeking work... If you can claim leave it til you have finished your job and got the voluntary work or they will penalise you. Also do you want to be faffed filling in your voluntary hours every week!? If not keep that quiet.

If you are a student with a child under the age of 5 you are entitled to IS, but as I work I don't know if my wage will cancel out the weekly allowance. I need to volunteer to get into uni, I have to have the experience to get on the course. So realistically wanted to leave work soon, I'm just not sure.

I had a meeting last week with income support. Studying does not affect income support neither does volunteering you just have to let them no. To put it how my adviser said it, you won't be badgered to work till your youngest child turns 5. She also said I may still be able to claim whilst at uni but it depends on any student loans or grants I would receive from uni but she said to definatly submit any student finace forms as you never no you may still get something.

Thank you :)

That helps, feel better about it now

So will income support just replace my wage?
