Stocking fillers for students

The "what to take to uni" thread was so useful I thought I'd start a festive one.

DD has said she still wants a stocking this year (bless). So I am looking for ideas of little things to go in it other than miniature bottles of alcohol

If you are doing a stocking, what are you putting in it?

I already have
some jokey post-it notes
a thing to measure helpings of spaghetti
chocolate reindeer (compulsory)

Ideas please.

CarreersGuru that would be the last thing any of mine would want in their stocking. 2 have been through uni and the youngest is in her first year. Stockings are supposed have fun things and. a few useful things like toiletries and hot chocolate, not serious books. Also we try not to spend more than £5 on a stocking item.

Do you still like stockings? Them, aghast, But its the best bit!
so,
DS1 (is in a grim cold student house)
fleece lined slipper socks ( M&S outlet)
fleece pj bottoms
oven gloves
pants & t shirt
thick boot socks
small mirror
earphones
Alex cartoon book & Tour de France book
Aftershave & shower gel
Wacky socks
squash balls
set of small glasses (Nutella, cheapskate!)
jelly beans
choc father xmas & reindeer & coins
personalised mug & hot chocolate
blow up daffodil
bottle of cider

DS2, still at home has a similar selection but with different books & sports kit. I have tried to keep costs down and got a lot from sale sections online ie 2.90 for a uniqlo tshirt. In total it has cost around 75. I set out to spend around 50 but started too soon Blush so at least have spread it over a few months
Boys are more difficult to buy silly stuff for as they get older (and too much tat makes me cross) but mine are usually happy with things they need and then dont have to spend their cash on. A choc father xmas is mandatory, it has to stick out of the top or there would be complaints.

Hot water bottle is always good for those not in halls. They'll be returning to uni for the coldest part of the year, to a house that isn't that warm.

I used to walk around the house with a hot water bottle tucked inside my jumper Blush

Sorry mummee

But I have a one tracked mind to help people and believe my book is lot's of fun and anyone reading it would thank you later big time.

It's like children having a bath - they may turn their noses up at first, but they'll love the long term benefits when they jump in - I promise.

Good luck anyway.

CareersGuru I didn't mean that my daughters would not have read a book like yours. Thwy might have bought it for themselves or may be had it as part of a main present, However istockings here are cheap ( well not actually cheap when you add up the cost of all the items),and cheerfull so your book isn't stocking material in our family.

mumeeee · 06/12/2013 13:41

CarreersGuru I have just realised you first post was deleted so I probably shouldn't have bothered with replying to your 2nd one. Right to get back to appropriate stocking fillers. My DDS have also had silly Christmas hats, gloves'scarf, socks.lots of stationary.I once put a pack of printer paper in DD2's stocking and she really appreciated it as she was printing a lot of work for uni and it saved her money.

Electric 'candles' you usually are not allowed candles so battery powered candles or nightlights.

Rizlas.......? Xmas Wink

One year I added colouring books and pencils.. You can get them in all sorts of interests from racing cars to historical figures. Be careful about googling 'adult colouring books' though. There are some good themed dot to dot books too. This year I'm looking at paper dolls.

What is it about cold student houses btw? For the money they're all spending on thick clothes etc they could just turn the heating up a bit.

madeofkent · 08/12/2013 22:02

lol to the last three suggestions... I have bought all sorts of weird and wonderful things this year, if anything more than usual, but to the above lists I would add a pair of gloves that you can wear while texting, they are only about £1.99 from amazon. OH thought it was dreadful, but I bought a funny cartoon teatowel for DS. Why ever not? He has to use them. I think I shall go back to the market and but=y him a funny washing up brush as well, they had some revolting ones that looked like dolls.

notallytuts · 15/12/2013 17:26

Whatdoiknowanyway poor insulation and damp walls meant my old student house never got warm no matter how much it was on. unfortunately!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/12/2013 17:33

Where can I find some really good colouring books? I want one for myself!

DD1 so far has got - knickers, socks, tights, hairspray, bodyspray, fake nails, Starbucks voucher, candy canes, chocolate coins

I like the magazine and post-it notes suggestions, and will steal them forthwith.
