Foundation Certificate Course and claiming child benefit

Hi
My daughter has started University. Her course is 4 years, the first year is a foundation course. Is this a Level 3 course ie the same as doing A Levels? If so would I still be able to claim child benefit for the first year?
Thank you

Foundation degree courses are usually counted as higher rather than further education.

Is your DD paying her fees and/ or entitled to support from the SLC? If so the answer is definitely no.

Is she living at home ?

stickymits · 13/10/2013 13:40

She has had to pay £4000 for the course and yes she is living at home.
Thanks

Is it a degree with a foundation year, upon completion she goes into the first year of the degree? If so fees can be paid by the SLC so it counts as higher not further education, even if she chooses to pay the fee herself.

Or is it an art foundation course, in which case I think it counts as further education as it is A level equivalent.

What sort of foundation course is it?

Foundation courses are higher than A levels. They are level 4 courses and count as Higher education. You won't be able to get child benefit for her.

Hi
Thanks for all your replies. It is a foundation certificate in computing course.

Could you provide a link to the course? "Foundation certificate" is something that covers a lot of different things.

I've managed to find the course on the university web site and it does say the modules in the first year are level 3. The following years are level 4 and 5. I have looked at the CB web site and it does say level 3 is acceptable but I'm not sure if it will be if the level 3 course is part of a degree course. I think I'll give them a ring tomorrow to find out.
Thanks

Level 3 at uni is not level 3 as in A Levels. A foundation degree or a foundation year are both HE.

The idea of a 'foundation certificate' I would imagine is that if they don't get on to the 'dull' degree they leave uni with a qualification.

i mean full degree not dull, although...............
