We have found already that the student forum on the Warwick Uni website has been a valuabel resource.

Also advice from past students on here & other friends so thought I'd share a few "ooh ...good tip" moments that we've already had as the lists are mounting up!!

-Keep stuff to take to a minimum, check the list of stuff provided first or else the kitchens end up with 8/10 sets of everything by the end of first week.

-ditto for groceries, stick to dry/tins so tehy last longer & the shared cupboard in the kitchen/fridge shelf may not be that big!

  • plain white china/crocks can be muddled/lost/appropriated with all the other IKEA stuff in the kitchen, a couple of granny's patterned plates will stand out as yours & can be found cheaply in charity shops. Ditto cutlery. Then no biggy if it doesn't come home at end of term.

-some halls provide linen/bedding but having your own from home helps with the settling in. Eg DD is taking her double duvet & own covers as that is snuggly on a single bed.

-lots of pound coins for laundry & buses.

-Double up the amount of underwear you pack, you'll be too busy the first week to do washing!

Loads more I'm sure, all little things but useful!

Please share your top tips

Thanks I just feel so weird! Have agreed to various work type projects as I thought about all the time I will have and now I can't be arsed and they are staring at me! lol.

MABS · 17/09/2013 07:09

work is my saviour :) now worried that dd being too positive, she must be wobbly really

MABS · 17/09/2013 17:04

just went to her empty bedroom, stripped bed etc for washing....really wouldn't recommend it girls :(

mumeeee · 17/09/2013 17:08

I agree MABs went into DD3's room to sort some stuff out.

MABS · 17/09/2013 17:17

indeed Mummeee...

mumeeee · 17/09/2013 23:18

MABs that should have said I went into DD3's room .:)
I was worried about DD3 tonight as I had send her several texts to ask her if she wanted me to send her the gloves I'd found. Eventually got an answer 2 hours later. Think she'd been having a good time with her new flat mates' She did say sorry

MABS · 18/09/2013 07:14

mine never replies for good few hours as she out/sleeping! sent of package of bits she forgot ystdy, gloves, sunglasses etc :)

ISingSoprano · 18/09/2013 13:53

Ds is off on Sunday so we have just been to Sainsburys to buy 'larder' type food. Lots of rice, pasta and noodles!

MissMarplesBloomers · 19/09/2013 18:30

Yes we did a big shop in Aldi last night for the same sort of stuff Ising lots of bargains & a few " ooh that might be usefuls" Grin

Had to rein myself in from over doing the food supplies, as DD pointed out we don't know how much space they'll have yet! Just want her to have plenty of meal makings for those early days when she is still working out her budget & comes in tired & hungry!!

Gawd - we've started packing dd1's stuff as she's off this weekend. We're going on the train, so can't go too mad but she has sooooooo many clothes! We're buying duvet, pillow, pans, food etc when we get there. It's starting to feel very real, finally.

MissMarplesBloomers · 19/09/2013 22:39

Good luck Remus & Lupin-ette!

MABS · 20/09/2013 13:38

good luck with this w/e girls :)

mumeeee · 20/09/2013 14:23

Good luck to everyone whose. DC are going this weekend

JGBMum · 20/09/2013 15:23

Another mum wishing good luck to everyone who leaves this weekend

As an aside, DS1 is going into his third year and has just filled the car with stuff and driven himself down to Uni digs for the day to offload everything, and is then driving back as he doesn't start for another week and a half.

What a difference a couple of years makes!

DalmationDots · 20/09/2013 16:15

JGBMum mines off for third year too. She did similar earlier in the summer she drove to her new house to take all the stuff which was cluttering our house and went to IKEA to get some rugs and things. So strange how grown up they are now!

She was going to just train it back on sunday with a suitcase of clothes but I offered to do a food shop (I secretly would quite like to see her new house etc!) so she took me up on that offer.

Two years ago feels like yesterday yet my DD is nothing like she was 2 years ago! She is like an almost grown up now!!!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/09/2013 16:38

Thanks, MissM. She's all packed now, apart from the very large pile of 'essential' hair and beauty products she deems to be in need of until the v last minute.

alreadytaken · 20/09/2013 17:49

apparently they need a clothes airer -anyone got a good suggestion on where to buy a cheap one that folds up as it'll need to fit in the car? One of the tasks they are happy to delegate....

JGBMum · 20/09/2013 19:24

Clothes Airer from Argos. Although our local Tescos had a load in stock last week so we picked one up along with pasta and tinned goods for DS2.

ISingSoprano · 20/09/2013 19:31

I may be speaking too soon but ds is just about packed ready for the off on Sunday and he really doesn't seem to have much stuff at all!

I just asked him if he would like pork belly or steak tomorrow night (his two favourite meals) and he replied .... 'both'!

ISingSoprano · 20/09/2013 19:32

Good luck everyone doing the drop off this weekend. Smile

MissMarplesBloomers · 20/09/2013 19:44

Oh bugger.... yes ...clothes airer-it was on my radar then fell off! Grin

Thanks for the reminder already & JGBmum bargain !

Ising I know what you mean about not much stuff, having read warnings from seasoned freshers we have kept it all to a minimum, but then she hasn't packed clothes or personal bits yet.

Her Dad is bringing her bike, not sure how much she'll use it but she can get off campus & explore a bit if she wants & its all good exercise!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/09/2013 19:46

The clothes - I didn't even know dd1 HAD so many clothes, let alone want to take so many! Fortunately, they mostly consist of v small skirts and almost as small dresses, but the big boots take some packing!

JGBMum · 20/09/2013 19:50

Trying to save money where we can! DS2 has managed to bag himself en-suite accommodation, so need extra items like shower mat and bleach/toilet cleaner etc.
I dread to think what this bathroom will look like by Christmas! Grin

HeavenstoMurgatroyd · 20/09/2013 19:58

Hi all (waves) - deposited my DS for year 2 last w/end. he's in private halls (cock up with house share arrangements last year that caused us (not him) a lot of sleepless nights!)

I haven't read the thread, and I'm sure this has all been said but here's my pointers:
coathangers
doorstop
I made a snapfish collage poster of family/ friends/ pets for him last year. He was a bit Hmm, but it did go up on the pin board (they are VERY strict about blutac on walls in halls of residence!)

Also SIT ON YOUR HANDS AND AVOID CONTACT FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF DAYS.... they need to find their feet, and their own way!
