Thoughts on Salford?

My DS has a very low offer (190 points) to read Military History at Salford which he is very keen on, but I am worried about the rumours around plans to close the Humanities Department. Apparently there would be guarantees to see students through to the end of their degrees but I am concerned about the implications around staff leaving and modules not running, etc. He is likely to get Bs and Cs so although he is now researching other places in case he decides to go through Adjustment there aren't a lot of other options unless he goes for a more generic History course. Any words of wisdom?

There's a Military History with International Politics degree at Aberystwyth. No idea what level of points might be required though.

fussychica · 14/08/2013 16:39

Looks like it might be 300 including at least one B.

Thanks, fussychica - he's already rejected an offer from there. I suppose it's just whether going to the place he really wants to go to outweighs the risk of what might happen with the department. I suppose he could always transfer after the first year if it doesn't look good.

Ah well, if it's the place... Salford is probably rather a fun place to study, all of Manchester and the Penines on your doorstep. And the BBC pretty much twinned with the University.

If you have assurances that they will complete the course it should be ok. The staff will presumably stay till the end and then he'll have those contacts when they move.

That is highly unlikely. When courses are known to be closing (as running a degree course out takes 3-4 years) most staff move as soon as they can.

Their jobs are then filled with temporary staff. Temporary lecturers are quite often the first teaching job people get, and so you can be left with few experienced staff to mentor new people. You are also likely to have fewer options to choose from.

Unfortunately creamteas is correct and although i have a passion for Salford having gained my degree here, have heard it has gone down recently.
The best course at Salford is Midwifery and it still seems to be one of the best, if not the best in the country.
I wouldn't go to Salford if the course was closing and would do my best to dissuade my dc.
Sorry OP I love Salford but think it would be far better to choose another provider.

Ah well - I'm happy to be corrected. Not so good for your Ds OPSad

Thanks for all the helpful comments - sadly the consensus is what I was fearing. We will have to see what his results are like tomorrow and take it from there.

Well he has exceeded his offer but hasn't done brilliantly so it looks like Salford is it despite my misgivings. But thanks for the input!
