Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin

Thats it really - just wanted to shout about it somewhere.

Ds1 already had his place at uni but was devastated with the U as were school so they paid to get it looked at again. Rather alarming though how the exam board (AQA) can cock up so massively.

Good luck to all those also waiting to hear back-

Great news!

Mrscog · 07/09/2012 17:20

Sounds more like an admin error rather than marking to me, but great news all the same!

VivaLeBeaver · 07/09/2012 17:23

That's very scary that they can get it so wrong. For someone else it could have cost them their uni place.

aleene · 07/09/2012 17:25

Wow! great news for you but also very worrying that there could be this amount of discrepancy.

Movingtosolihull · 07/09/2012 17:26

Thats very good news for your soon.

But I have to say I am completely Confused as to how such a thing could happen.

Its not right really is it ? What happens to those kids who cant afford or have parents who dont have the foresight to look into getting a paper remarked.

Tis a minefield...

NotInGuatemalaNowDrRopata · 07/09/2012 17:28

That should have come with a huge apology!

eatyourveg · 07/09/2012 18:32

Movingtosolihull School initiated it all and paid for everything not us, they rang and said they wanted to get the script back as the mark was so far off his normal standard of work. They scrutinised his essays, then sent the paper to the specialist English teacher for the group of schools the school is member of to get a second opinion and to confirm their thoughts and then a week later they rang back to say they recommended a remark.

Not an admin error as far as I can tell MrsCog as the script quite plainly shows his original marks for each essay along with the comments from the marker.

Wow, Wow and triple Wow. That is just Shock'ing

Bet your DS1 was rather pleased with himself.

CherryLip · 07/09/2012 23:34

Oh good for your son. I'm never sure when to ask for remark. DD had A*AA at A 2 which is of course good but one of her geography papers was a D and the other 100%! I think the school should have got the paper and would have paid but it was never suggested.

BeckAndCall · 08/09/2012 07:22

Wow, that's amazing. Well done to your DS.

But it's scary to think they can have got it so wrong in the first place. Thank goodness his uni place was confirmed otherwise you'd have been a nervous wreck !

RedBeret · 08/09/2012 07:40

EatYourVeg - That is fantastic news, well done! BUT it is also horryfiying that such a thing has happened in the first place. I am quite appalled that your ds has had to suffer over the past couple of weeks, wondering where his future lies. Also, it begs the question of how often this sort of thing is happening. There will be other students out there, who have lost their FE places due to such terrible errors. One would hope the examining board would, in light of this error, ensure that all the other papers he/she has marked will be re-marked, and that this teacher is not allowed to mark in future. Disgraceful. And yes, like the other poster says, your DS is owed an apology for the distress this must have caused.

eatyourveg · 08/09/2012 10:27

He decided to defer his uni place and was going to retake the unit in January (school said he could do it there) As he had the uni place it was more about his self confidence and although he is happy, his overriding emotion is one of vindication.

I've never heard of an exam board apologising - would be nice but can't see it happening. Even though he has left school now, several of his old teachers have emailed congratulating him on the result and wishing him well. School have been fantastic with their support. He's a very lucky boy to have so many people rooting for him.

Redberet 'One would hope the examining board would, in light of this error, ensure that all the other papers he/she has marked will be re-marked, and that this teacher is not allowed to mark in future.'

At the exam board I work at (can't say which one) that is exactly what does happen.

sue52 · 11/09/2012 13:19

eatyourveg What a result. Well done to your DS. Did the school just get a clerical check or a review of marking?

Tressy · 11/09/2012 13:31

eatyourveg, great news but such a difference. It must have brought his overall mark right down, so pleased the uni accepted him anyway, imagine the stress otherwise.

Makes me wonder. DD got a U mark in a history AS level which was a real Shock, she resat it later and got a much higher mark but still.

eatyourveg · 11/09/2012 15:40

Sue52 I think it must have been a review of the marking as the front cover had the marks on and they clearly added up to a U. Not even near the E boundary. It was looked at by head of English at the HQ of the group of schools before a decision was made to send it back.

Tressy yes it brought his overall grade right right down and he missed his offer but the uni took him anyway. I think it may have been something to do with him having sat a scholarship paper for the uni earlier in the year and he passed the English Lit paper so I think they may have taken him because they had already seen his work but who knows? So pleased as he had gone off his insurance place
